The Holy Family procession and the tradition of the 99 dishes
The Saint Joseph Festival has been celebrated in Lentini, an important town in the province of Syracuse, Sicily, since time immemorial. Until the 1970s, the event was fixed on March 19th, the saint's liturgical day; since the 1980s, the celebration has been moved to the Sunday closest to March 19th to encourage the participation of the entire Leontine community. The festival represents one of the strongest identity-defining moments for the city, bringing together religious, popular, and charitable dimensions.
The heart of the day is the procession of the Holy Family, featuring three living figures: Saint Joseph, the Baby Jesus, and the Madonna. The pageant traditionally departs from the Church of the Immaculate Conception and travels through the streets of the historic center, including Via Niccolini and Via Conte Alaimo, to reach Piazza Umberto I. In the past, the three characters were chosen from among the city's poor according to specific criteria; since the late 1980s, the selection has been entrusted to volunteers, making the tradition more respectful of personal dignity without losing its charitable value.
A truly unique element of the Lentini festival is the display of the 99 dishes, set up in the Sanctuary of the Three Saints (also known as the Church of the Fountain), now a diocesan sanctuary. The number is not random: 33 courses, representing the years of Christ, multiplied by the 3 characters of the Holy Family. Among the votive dishes, one finds the flavors of Sicilian peasant cuisine, such as pasta with lentils, rice with fava beans, and potato and asparagus croquettes. In the past, families would collect portions and invite neighbors to share "u mangiari di San Giuseppi".
The day concludes in the spirit of solidarity: a charity auction is held in Piazza Umberto I, where bread, sweets, cured meats, and other goods donated by local merchants are offered. The offerings collected during the procession and the proceeds from the auction support assistance for the needy in the area, in keeping with the original spirit of the festival.
Between solemn masses, the blessing of the bread, exhibitions, and convivial moments, the Saint Joseph Festival in Lentini remains an event deeply rooted in the identity of the municipality and the entire Leontine area in the province of Syracuse.
