About Saint Joseph in Calcarelli

In the village of Calcarelli, part of Castellana Sicula, the Saint Joseph Festival is one of the most cherished events of the year. Around March 19th, the community gathers for a Solemn Mass with the confraternities, the ritual of the virginieddi, and the blessing of the banquet tables prepared in honor of the Patriarch. A tradition of devotion and sharing that weaves together liturgy, sacred art, and popular Madonie gastronomy, featuring votive breads, tagghiarini, battered salt cod, and the essential fried sfingi.

The Saint Joseph Festival in Calcarelli

In the village of Calcarelli, within the municipality of Castellana Sicula in the province of Palermo and in the heart of the Madonie Park, the Saint Joseph Festival represents one of the most deeply rooted devotional and popular events of the year. The celebration, tied to the liturgical feast of March 19th, is particularly significant in this small mountain community, where faith, sacred art, and rural tradition merge over a few intense days.

The religious heart: the Solemn Mass

The central moment is the Solemn Mass, attended by the confraternities dedicated to the Saint. The celebration, led by the San Giuseppe Parish of Calcarelli, brings together the village residents and devotees returning from neighboring towns in the Madonie. The liturgical rite is surrounded by the care of the altars, the wooden statues kept in the village churches, and the participation of families who have passed down gestures and prayers linked to the Patriarch for generations.

The ritual of the virginieddi

The most distinctive sign of the festival is the tradition of the virginieddi, the so-called "manciari i San Giuseppi" (Saint Joseph's meals). Some families set up tables laden with local products and invite children, teenagers, and unmarried young people to consume the ritual meal, a symbol of abundance and charity toward the little ones and the needy. The symbolic menu follows a precise script: an appetizer with a quarter of an orange, two olives, and a slice of bread, followed by tagghiarini with beans, lentils, and wild fennel, cardoons and battered salt cod, and finally the classic and highly anticipated fried sfingi.

The banquet tables and sharing

Alongside the virginieddi, the festival includes the blessing of the banquet tables prepared in honor of Saint Joseph, a sign of sharing and gratitude. The tables, rich in handmade votive breads, vegetables, and sweets, exclude meat in observance of the Lenten period and become a community occasion: as the organizers repeat, "together we build community."

A living tradition

The virginieddi initiative in Castellana Sicula and Calcarelli, born from an idea by Lucia Sammarco, has consolidated over the years thanks to the Circoli Sociali Riuniti, the governors of the confraternity, and numerous volunteers, with the patronage of the Municipality of Castellana Sicula. The festival is a small jewel in the Madonie calendar, where the most authentic Sicily tells its story through faith, art, and the flavors of peasant cuisine.
