The 'Tavulata' and the sacred re-enactment of the Flight into Egypt in the heart of Sicily
In the heart of Sicily, in Barrafranca (Enna province), March 19th is a date that weaves together popular faith, sacred theatre, and traditional gastronomy. The Saint Joseph Festival, which coincides with Father's Day, is much more than a religious observance here: it is a community ritual that renews itself every year, centered around the Tavulata, a grand, lavishly set table prepared as a vow to the Saint for a grace received.
The most evocative moment takes place in Piazza Regina Margherita, the town's main square, around noon. Here, the sacred re-enactment of the Flight into Egypt comes to life, depicting the episode where the Holy Family flees from the Massacre of the Innocents ordered by Herod. Children dressed in finely embroidered costumes play the roles of Saint Joseph, the Madonna, the Baby Jesus, and the Angel, while three young men on horseback portray Herod's emissaries. The performance lasts about an hour and a half, drawing the entire community to the square.
The same scene is replicated in the homes of the devout, where the Tavulata is prepared on hand-embroidered tablecloths. It is a vow: the family that has received a grace sets the table and offers food, following an ancient charitable vocation. In the weeks leading up to the festival, food is collected for families in need, a reminder that the abundant Saint Joseph's lunch originated as a gift to the poor.
Since the festival falls during Lent, the menu is strictly meat-free. The signature first course is minestrone with homemade linguine, seasoned with seasonal vegetables. Alongside it, one finds vegetable omelettes, the votive bread of Saint Joseph in its traditional shapes, and the typical sweets of the occasion: sfingi, pasta siringata, pagnuccata, and armuzzi santi.
The Saint Joseph Festival of Barrafranca is part of the broader heritage of the 'Tavolate' in the Enna region and inland Sicily, yet it retains its own unique traits linked to the equestrian performance and local devotion, also preserved at the Mother Church. It is an event that attracts curious visitors and the devout every year, telling the soul of this town in the province of Enna better than many words.
On March 19, 2026, Barrafranca renewed its most heartfelt festival. Around noon, the sacred re-enactment of the Flight into Egypt took place in Piazza Regina Margherita, with children playing the roles of Saint Joseph, the Madonna, the Baby Jesus, and the Angel, and three horsemen portraying Herod's emissaries.
The Tavulata of Lenten dishes, featuring minestrone with homemade linguine and traditional sweets, confirmed the devotional and charitable dimension of the event. For organizational reasons, the evening procession with the statue of the Saint was not held on March 19th and was postponed, a sign of a devotion that remains alive in Barrafranca all year round.
