The mid-August festival of faith, light displays, and folk music in Scorrano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Madonna della Luce and San Rocco Festival is one of the most cherished religious events of the summer in Scorrano, in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento (Puglia Region). Celebrated in mid-August, it complements the major patronal feast of Santa Domenica held in July, extending the community spirit throughout the peak of the summer season. The event intertwines two devotions dear to the community: the Madonna della Luce, venerated as the protector of expectant mothers, and San Rocco, traditionally invoked against epidemics and diseases.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the evening procession that winds through the streets of Scorrano's historic center, accompanied by the faithful, confraternities, and the local marching band. The Church of the Madonna della Luce hosts the liturgical celebrations, with masses and a solemn service marking the days of festivities. It is a moment of reflection and collective identity, where the Scorrano community gathers around its traditions.
Scorrano is known as the world capital of luminarie, and this August festival is also adorned with the famous light architectures that make this Salento town unique. The civil program is concentrated in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele: concerts of Salento folk music, music and dance evenings, vernacular theater performances, vintage car and motorcycle exhibitions, and events designed for families and young people. The organization is entrusted to the Madonna della Luce and San Rocco Festival Committee, driven by the town's young volunteers.
Bridging the sacred and the profane, the festival represents a moment of great participation for Scorrano and the neighboring towns of lower Salento. The alleys and squares fill with stalls, the scents of local gastronomy, and visitors drawn by the lights and the festive atmosphere. For those visiting Puglia around Ferragosto, it is an authentic opportunity to experience Salento's folk traditions, amidst faith, light, and music.
The Madonna della Luce and San Rocco Festival Committee has not yet published the dates and official program for the 2026 edition. Based on previous editions, the festival traditionally takes place in mid-August in Scorrano, featuring a religious procession, artistic light displays, and evenings of music and entertainment in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. This page will be updated as soon as the committee releases the final calendar of festivities.
Scorrano is located in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS 275 or provincial roads connecting Maglie and Otranto; from Lecce, it is about 35 km heading south. The nearest train station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est; the reference airports are Brindisi-Casale and Bari-Palese.
Civil festivities are concentrated in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and the streets of the historic center, while religious celebrations are held in the Church of the Madonna della Luce.
Participation in all religious and civil events is free and open to the public.
During the festival days, the center is closed to traffic: it is advisable to park in the outer areas and reach the squares on foot. We recommend visiting Scorrano after sunset, when the luminarie are at their most spectacular.
