Italy's largest folk music festival, in the heart of Salento
La Notte della Taranta is much more than a festival: it is a grand collective ritual that lights up Salento every summer, recognized as the most impressive folk music event in Italy and one of the most significant in Europe. Its heart beats in Melpignano, a small town in the province of Lecce, in the Grecìa Salentina area, where every late August the square of the former Augustinian Convent transforms into a vast arena of bodies, tambourines, and voices. This is where the famous Concertone takes place, the final evening that concludes weeks of music spread across the local villages.
Founded in 1998, the festival is rooted in ancient memory: that of tarantism, the phenomenon where women "bitten" by the spider sought healing through the frenzied dance of the pizzica. From this folk legacy, the La Notte della Taranta Foundation has built a cultural project that rescued the pizzica from oblivion to return it to the world, blending it with jazz, rock, electronic, and Mediterranean sounds thanks to the contribution of a different Maestro Concertatore each year.
The event is not limited to the Melpignano evening: in the preceding weeks, an itinerant festival visits about twenty squares in Salento, mostly in the Greek-speaking villages of Grecìa Salentina, featuring free concerts by the La Notte della Taranta Popular Orchestra and numerous pizzica groups. The grand finale is the Concertone, led by the Maestro Concertatore and accompanied by dancers and choreography, capable of attracting an oceanic crowd to Melpignano and being broadcast live on RAI.
With its itinerant stages, the festival gathers over 200,000 spectators in total, while the Melpignano Concertone alone has been one of the most crowded live events in Southern Italy for years. It is an appointment that combines tourism, identity, and entertainment, bringing visitors from all over Italy and abroad to Puglia every August.
Attending La Notte della Taranta means immersing yourself in the most authentic soul of Salento: the hypnotic rhythm of tambourines, the collective dance under the stars, free admission, and a festive atmosphere that unites thousands of strangers. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Melpignano, Grecìa Salentina, and the province of Lecce at their most vibrant.
The 29th edition of La Notte della Taranta chooses the Mediterranean as its central theme, "with its cultures and stories, a space of relationships and a sea that unites." Leading the Popular Orchestra as Maestro Concertatore is Ermal Meta, a singer-songwriter born in Fier, Albania, and raised in Bari, whose personal history embodies the theme of hospitality and dialogue between peoples. The choreography is signed by Fredy Franzutti. The grand finale, the Melpignano Concertone, is held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in the square of the former Augustinian Convent and is broadcast live by RAI and Radio 2.
Before the Concertone, the La Notte della Taranta Popular Orchestra brings pizzica to the squares of Salento with twenty free stages:
Announced guests: Alessandra Amoroso, Sayf, Welo, and Levante.
The final Concertone is held in Melpignano (LE), in the square of the former Augustinian Convent. The itinerant festival stages take place in the squares of the villages of Grecìa Salentina and Salento.
The itinerant festival enlivens the evenings of August; the final Concertone is traditionally held in the latter part of the month in Melpignano.
All events, including the itinerant stages and the Melpignano Concertone, are free of charge.
Melpignano can be reached by car from Lecce (about 30 km) via the SS16 and the provincial roads of lower Salento; the Melpignano train station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est. On the evenings of the Concertone, shuttle services and dedicated parking are available due to the enormous turnout.
