The patronal feast of Reitano, in the Messina Nebrodi mountains

In the heart of the Nebrodi mountains, perched at an altitude of 396 meters and overlooking the Tyrrhenian side of the Messina province, the small town of Reitano celebrates its patron saint, Saint Erasmus of Formia, every June 2nd. For a village of just a few hundred inhabitants, this occasion represents much more than a simple religious solemnity: it is the moment when the entire community, including those who have emigrated and return for the event, reconnects with their roots and identity.
Saint Erasmus, a bishop and martyr who lived between the 3rd and 4th centuries, carried out his ministry across Lazio, Campania, and Puglia. Venerated as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, he is traditionally invoked as the protector of sailors and seafarers, as well as those suffering from stomach ailments. His name is also linked to the famous luminous phenomenon known as "St. Elmo's Fire." This devotion, which spread throughout the Mediterranean coast starting in the Middle Ages, has found a genuine and popular expression in Reitano, preserved from generation to generation.
The heart of the day is the procession of the saint's statue, accompanied by the faithful along the narrow streets of the historic center, among the stone houses of the old village. The feast has its roots in the very history of the town: the ancient Regitano was born as a winter settlement for the shepherds of Mistretta during transhumance, before becoming a stable community with its own identity. Alongside religious rites, there is no shortage of popular festivities, with marching bands, illuminations, and the conviviality that characterizes the festivals of Sicilian villages.
The feast is also the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic territory largely untouched by mass tourism. Reitano includes the coastal hamlet of Villa Margi, which hosts one of the works of the famous open-air contemporary art park Fiumara d'Arte, featuring a sculpture dedicated to Tano Festa. All around lies the Nebrodi district, with its historic villages like Mistretta, Santo Stefano di Camastra, and Pettineo, and the nearby Tyrrhenian coastline. Visiting Reitano during the feast means immersing yourself in the truest Sicily, defined by popular traditions and the hospitality of small towns.
The Saint Erasmus Patronal Feast is renewed every year in Reitano, in the province of Messina, according to the tradition linked to the saint's liturgical memory, set for June 2nd. At the moment, the dates and the official program for the 2026 edition have not yet been released by the municipal administration and the parish. As usual, the day will include religious celebrations and the procession of the patron saint, accompanied by the participation of the entire Reitano community. For the final program, please consult the official channels of the Municipality of Reitano.
