The pilgrimage to the Letto Santo Sanctuary on Monte Santa Croce, in Santo Stefano di Camastra
The Letto Santo Festival is one of the most deeply rooted religious traditions in the Nebrodi Mountains, celebrated in Santo Stefano di Camastra, in the heart of the province of Messina, Sicily. At its center is the Letto Santo Sanctuary, which stands isolated on Monte Santa Croce at an altitude of approximately 874 meters, offering a panoramic view over the Tyrrhenian coast and the valleys of the Nebrodi and Madonie. The name "Letto Santo" (Holy Bed) refers to the Cross as the bed upon which Christ fell asleep in death, an image dear to local popular devotion.
The origins of the Sanctuary are likely Norman (11th-12th century); the church was once linked to the Benedictine Abbey and still houses a precious 17th-century wooden Crucifix, venerated for centuries. The sacristy preserves numerous ex-votos and 19th-century painted tablets, concrete testimonies of the faith of entire generations from the town and neighboring villages. The Sanctuary remains open year-round, but it experiences its highest influx of pilgrims between mid-August and mid-September.
The devotion is expressed in two distinct appointments on the calendar:
The most evocative moment of the September festivities is the night pilgrimage that takes place in the days leading up to the solemn Sunday: the faithful gather at the Mother Church and ascend in silence toward the Sanctuary, stopping to meditate on the Stations of the Cross along the way. The following day, tradition calls for the horseback pilgrimage, which concludes with the blessing of the pilgrims. The festival culminates on the solemn day with the procession of the Holy Cross relic around the Sanctuary and the fireworks that mark its conclusion.
More than just a religious event, the Letto Santo Festival is a defining identity marker for Santo Stefano di Camastra, a town famous throughout Sicily for its ancient ceramics tradition. The climb up the mountain unites the spiritual dimension with the communal one, accompanied by the town band and the gathering of devotees from the nearby Nebrodi towns. For those visiting the area, the festival is also an opportunity to discover a village defined as an "open-air museum" and a Sanctuary that offers one of the widest panoramas of the northern Sicilian coast.
The 2026 Letto Santo Festival in Santo Stefano di Camastra (ME) maintains its traditional structure divided into two moments of the year. On May 3rd, 2026, the Holy Cross festival was celebrated, commemorating the ancient pre-conciliar recurrence. The main celebration is held on the second Sunday of September, near the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14th, featuring the night pilgrimage, the horseback ascent, the procession of the Holy Cross relic around the Sanctuary on Monte Santa Croce, and the concluding fireworks. The official program with the times of the masses and processions for September 2026 has not yet been released by the parish of San Nicolò di Bari.
