The patronal feast of Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano featuring the blessing of the throats
The Saint Blaise Festival is the most cherished event of the year in Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano, a village in the province of Frosinone nestled along the Garigliano river, at the southern tip of the Lazio region. Every February 3rd, the community, led by the Saint Blaise Parish with the support of the Municipality, honors its patron saint with celebrations that turn the village into a pilgrimage destination for the entire Cassino area: in recent editions, over 1,500 faithful have arrived from Cassino, Pignataro, Sant'Angelo in Theodice, Piedimonte, Rocca d'Evandro, Sant'Andrea, Sant'Apollinare, and Pontecorvo.
Saint Blaise, Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia and a martyr around the year 316, is venerated throughout Italy as the protector against throat ailments. In Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano, this devotion is expressed through the festival's most characteristic ritual: the priest crosses two blessed candles—a memory of the Candlemas just celebrated—and touches them to the throats of the faithful while reciting the blessing formula. At the end, traditional blessed bread rolls are distributed, which families take home as a sign of protection for the new year.
The festival is preceded by a long journey of spiritual preparation. The novena takes place from January 25th to 30th, followed by the solemn triduum from January 31st to February 2nd, the day of Candlemas. On February 3rd, the patron saint's day, the Church of Saint Blaise—which houses a 14th-century crucifix and a Baroque altar from the Church of Saint Eligius in Aversa—hosts the main celebrations: the morning Eucharist, the solemn pontifical mass at 11:00 AM presided over by a bishop or guest prelate, the procession with the saint's statue through the village streets, and the evening mass with the exposition and kissing of the relic.
Alongside the moments of faith, the secular program enlivens the festival evenings. In recent years, the schedule has featured concerts by local groups on the evening of February 1st and, on the evening of February 3rd, the Opera Grand Gala: a musical journey through operetta and Neapolitan and Italian songs with a tenor, soprano, and accompanying pianist, bringing great music to a village of only a few hundred inhabitants.
Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano is a frontier municipality where Lazio meets Campania and where the memory of the Second World War—the village lies along the Gustav Line—coexists with centuries-old peasant traditions. The Saint Blaise Festival, with its mayors, authorities, civil protection, Red Cross, and statue bearers, is the moment when this small community of southern Ciociaria reaffirms its identity and faith, opening itself to pilgrims from the entire valley.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Blaise Festival, celebrated on Tuesday, February 3rd, and preceded as per tradition by the novena and the preparatory triduum, confirmed the growing appeal of the patronal feast of Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano. According to the Diocese of Sora-Cassino-Aquino-Pontecorvo, over 1,500 pilgrims arrived from Pignataro, Sant'Angelo in Theodice, Cassino, Piedimonte, Rocca d'Evandro, Sant'Andrea, Sant'Apollinare, and Pontecorvo.
The central moment was the solemn pontifical mass at 11:00 AM, presided over by Monsignor Marco Gandolfo of the Diocese of Rome and welcomed by the parish priest, Father Lorenzo Vallone. The celebration, intense and well-attended, recalled the testimony of Saint Blaise, «a shepherd capable of guarding and caring for the fragilities of his people». Present were local mayors, military authorities, civil protection, the Red Cross, and the statue bearers. The day concluded with the procession and the ritual of the blessing of the throats with crossed candles, followed by the distribution of blessed bread rolls.
Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano is located in the province of Frosinone, about 15 km from Cassino. By car: A1 motorway, Cassino or San Vittore exit, then SS 630 Ausonia towards Formia. By train: Cassino station on the Rome-Naples line, then local bus connections.
All religious celebrations and evening events are free of charge.
The main celebration is the pontifical mass at 11:00 AM on February 3rd, followed by the procession: it is recommended to arrive early as the village welcomes thousands of pilgrims. Info: Municipality of Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano, tel. +39 0776 98073.
