Feast of Saints Nicandro and Sebastiano

A village feast overlooking the sea

Tremensuoli is a small hilltop village in the municipality of Minturno, in the province of Latina, at the southern tip of Lazio, where the Garigliano river marks the border with Campania. With about a thousand residents, houses clustered along the hillside, olive groves, and vineyards, it overlooks the Scauri plain as it slopes down toward the Gulf of Gaeta. In this setting, every year on the second Sunday of August, the feast of the patron saints Nicandro and Sebastiano is celebrated: one of the most cherished events in the Minturno calendar, drawing both locals and those who return to their hometown specifically for the occasion.

Why August instead of June

Liturgically, Saint Nicandro is venerated on June 17th, but in Tremensuoli, the actual festivities have been held in August for centuries. The reason is deeply rooted in rural life: in August, field work slowed down, and workers from the coastal factories in Scauri were on holiday. The feast thus became a thanksgiving for the harvest and a moment for the entire community to gather together.

The martyr saints and the link to Venafro

Nicandro was a Roman army officer stationed in Venafro, martyred in 304 AD during the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian alongside his comrade Marciano; his wife Daria, who had also converted to Christianity, supported him until his martyrdom and shared his fate. Before the creation of the province of Littoria and the course of the Garigliano river turned these areas into a regional border, Tremensuoli and Venafro both belonged to the Terra di Lavoro: the village inhabitants would regularly descend to the fair and celebrations in Venafro on June 17th, bringing home the devotion to the soldier-saint, who was joined in local worship by Saint Sebastiano, also a soldier and martyr.

The church and the statues

The heart of the festivities is the parish church of San Nicandro, a 16th-century building with a Greek cross plan that houses the 19th-century wooden statues of the two patron saints, carried in procession by the confraternity members. The parish is located on Via Nuova, in the center of the village, and organizes the feast together with the festival committee and the Municipality of Minturno.

How the festival days unfold

The calendar spans about ten days, with a structure that has remained largely unchanged over the years:

• Novena and preparatory celebrations in the parish church in the days leading up to the main Sunday;
• Blessing of the statue bearers on the eve of the feast, during the mass accompanied by the parish choir;
• Festive wake-up call at dawn on Sunday, with bells ringing and the brass band parading through the village streets;
• Solemn Mass, in some years presided over by the Archbishop of Gaeta;
• Solemn procession with the saints' statues through the village streets up to the Pastino, where the effigy of Saint Nicandro blesses the entire Scauri plain down to the sea;
• Concerts and shows in Piazza San Nicandro Martire, featuring tribute bands, ballroom orchestras, and cabaret;
• Food stalls serving traditional Minturno dishes;
• Fireworks display at midnight, the famous "San Nicandro fireworks," eagerly awaited throughout the gulf.

The context: Minturno and the Gulf of Gaeta

Visitors arriving for the feast will find the archaeological area of Minturnae just a few kilometers away, with its Roman theater, forum, and aqueduct remains, as well as the medieval village of Minturno with its baronial castle and the beaches of Scauri and Marina di Minturno. The province of Latina offers a packed calendar of food festivals and patronal feasts in August, but the one in Tremensuoli retains a particularly authentic character: a community feast, not designed for tourism, where the visitor is welcomed as a guest of the entire village.

Tips for visitors

The village is small and the roads narrow as you climb: it is best to arrive early, park at the entrance of the village, and continue on foot. On the evening of the procession and the fireworks, the village gets crowded, and Tremensuoli's panoramic position offers a view of the gulf that is worth the climb alone.
