Festival of Maria SS. Addolorata

A devotion spanning centuries

In the heart of the Ciociaria region, in the province of Frosinone, the town of Pignataro Interamna has been celebrating its most cherished event for nearly two centuries: the Festival of Maria SS. Addolorata, the town's patroness and protector. Local devotion to the Virgin of the Seven Sorrows is documented in parish archives as early as 1540, but it was in 1677 that the archpriest Don Lucio De Nacci founded the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows, completed in just one year thanks to the fervor of the local population. The venerated wooden statue, carved from pear wood by an unknown Neapolitan artist in the 15th century, was blessed on April 13, 1679, and has since remained the center of the village's religious life.

The 1837 Vow

The festival in its current form stems from a popular vow: in 1837, after the community was spared from the cholera epidemic that struck the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, the people of Pignataro decided to dedicate a thanksgiving solemnity to the Madonna every year, set for the third Sunday of September. It is a date the town has continued to honor, with the sole exception of the late 19th century, when health concerns forced a temporary move to the second Sunday of October.

The Perpetual Coronation

On August 9, 1925, the Chapter of St. Peter granted the decree for the perpetual coronation of the statue; the solemn ceremony took place on September 21, 1926, presided over by the Abbot Ordinary of Montecassino. Following the wartime destruction that devastated this part of lower Lazio, the statue was crowned again on September 21, 1952, by Abbot Ildefonso Rea. In 2025, the community celebrated the centenary of that decree (1925-2025) with conferences, tributes, and moments of historical reflection in the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows and the Church of the SS. Salvatore.

How the festival unfolds

The celebration maintains the traditional structure of patronal festivals in southern Lazio:

• a three-day preparation period (triduum) with masses and prayers in the Church of the Madonna dei Sette Dolori;
• the solemn Sunday mass, often presided over by a guest priest;
• the procession of the Addolorata statue through the town streets, accompanied by the Confraternity and the faithful;
• a brass band concert, an essential tradition of Ciociaria festivals;
• food stalls, illuminations, and festivities in the square during the final evenings.

A bond reaching New York

The Confraternity Pia Società Vergine SS. Addolorata, established on June 21, 1766, remains the guardian of the tradition today. Its history illustrates the relationship between Pignataro Interamna and emigration: in 1907, some emigrants from Pignataro founded a branch of the Confraternity in New York, which was regularized in 1910, and in 1948, a replica of the statue was sent to Long Island City so it could be venerated overseas. Every September, it is no coincidence that many families originally from the town return for the festival: it is an event of identity even more than a tourist attraction.

Visitors arriving for the festival can take the opportunity to explore the area: the Church of the Madonna dei Sette Dolori, on Via Roma, preserves columns from the ancient bell tower of Termini and a fragment of a Lombard cross dating back to before the year 1000, as well as frescoes created in 1970 by Professor Giovanni Bizzoni. Nearby lies the archaeological area of ancient Interamna Lirenas, a Roman colony founded in 312 BC, while the Liri Valley and nearby Cassino offer itineraries of great historical and scenic interest.
