The solemn procession of Saint Anthony of Padua through the districts of Mugnano del Cardinale
In the heart of the Bassa Irpinia region, the municipality of Mugnano del Cardinale (Province of Avellino, Campania) experiences one of its most attended days of devotion in mid-June: the solemn procession of Saint Anthony of Padua. Known throughout Italy for the Sanctuary of Santa Filomena, the town dedicates an annual event to the Saint of Padua that involves the entire community, from local families to devotees arriving from the nearby Baianese and Nolano areas. This is not a spectacle staged for tourists; it is an authentic village rite, and that is precisely what makes it so special.
The procession begins at 5:00 PM from the Sanctuary of Santa Filomena in Piazza Umberto I, winding along a long route that touches virtually every corner of the town. The itinerary, announced annually by the organizing committee, includes:
Along the way, there are several stops in the districtsโRione Scuole Medie, Rione Campo, American, and Rione Mastrangeloโwhere the procession pauses for a moment of communal prayer. These are the most moving moments: residents await the Saint's passage in front of their homes, with drapes, flowers, and improvised illuminations adorning their balconies.
The event is organized by the Saint Anthony Festival Committee in collaboration with the Sanctuary of Santa Filomena, under the guidance of the rector, Father Giuseppe Autorino. For several years, the statue of the Saint has been entrusted to the pallbearers of Saint Matthew from Salerno, who accompany the effigy through the streets of Mugnano with their rhythmic pace: a consolidated devotional twinning that links the small Irpinian community to the great processional tradition of Salerno.
At the end of the tour, the procession returns to the Sanctuary, where the final Holy Mass is celebrated, officially closing the festivities in honor of Saint Anthony. In some editions, the day has concluded with a fireworks display, while in past years, the civil program has also hosted entertainment evenings in Piazza Umberto I.
With just over 5,000 inhabitants, nestled at an altitude of 250 meters and about twenty kilometers from Avellino, Mugnano del Cardinale has been a pilgrimage destination for over two centuries. Since 1805, it has housed the relics of the young martyr Saint Philomena, the town's patron saint, whose devotion has spread throughout Southern Italy and well beyond national borders. The local religious calendar is therefore particularly rich: after Saint Anthony in June, the feast of Mary Most Holy of Graces and Our Lady of Mount Carmel follow in July, followed by the great Philomenian celebrations in August with the battenti (penitents) and the candlelight procession.
Visitors arriving for the procession can take the opportunity to discover the area: the Mugnano Salami, a recognized traditional agri-food product, the hazelnuts and chestnuts from the surrounding hills, and the Caciocavallo Silano PDO cheese. Beyond the Sanctuary, visitors should see the 17th-century church of Santa Maria del Carmine e Liberatore, in late Baroque style, and the ruins of the Litto castle on the mountain of the same name, offering panoramic views of the entire valley.
The procession is open to the public and free of charge, taking place entirely outdoors. It is advisable to arrive in town well before 5:00 PM, as streets in the center are progressively closed to traffic and parking near Piazza Umberto I fills up quickly. Comfortable shoes are a must: the route is long and includes uphill and downhill sections.
On Sunday, June 14, 2026, the community of Mugnano del Cardinale renewed one of the town's most heartfelt religious traditions: the solemn procession of Saint Anthony of Padua, organized by the Saint Anthony Festival Committee in collaboration with the Sanctuary of Santa Filomena, under the guidance of rector Father Giuseppe Autorino.
At 5:00 PM, the procession departed from the Sanctuary for a particularly long route, designed to reach all the town's neighborhoods. Along the way, several prayer stops were observed in the districts, moments when residents awaited the passage of the statue in front of their homes.
Upon returning to the Sanctuary, the final Holy Mass was celebrated, officially closing the festivities in honor of the Saint of Padua.
