Devotion, illuminations, and taranta in the heart of Salento
In the town of Tricase, in the province of Lecce, the Saint Anthony of Padua Festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is the moment when the entire community of lower Salento gathers around the parish church dedicated to the Saint and the picturesque Piazza Cappuccini. For days, the town center lights up with artistic illuminations, fills with the scents of market stalls, and resonates with music, merging popular devotion with the joy of a village festival.
Saint Anthony of Padua is among the most beloved saints in Southern Italy, and in Tricase, his veneration is deep and ancient. The statue of the Saint, kept in the Capuchin church, is at the heart of the celebrations: revolving around it are the tredicina (thirteen days of prayer) that prepare for the festival, the solemn holy masses, and the grand procession that winds through the streets of the town accompanied by brass bands. It is an intangible heritage that every generation of Tricase residents passes down with sincere participation.
Alongside the liturgical dimension, the festival offers a rich secular program. The Apulian travelling brass bands, with their morning concerts and grand lyrical-symphonic repertoires played under the bandstand, are one of the most iconic elements of Salento tradition. In the evening, the stage in Piazza Cappuccini hosts concerts ranging from pizzica and Mediterranean music to street band performances, in a festive atmosphere that engages residents and visitors until late at night.
As is tradition for patronal festivals in Salento, the most anticipated moment is the midnight fireworks display: the fireworks illuminate the sky over Tricase and bring the solemn day of June 13th to a spectacular close, drawing large crowds along the streets and panoramic viewpoints of the town.
Located just a few kilometers from the sea at Marina Serra and the village of Tricase Porto, Tricase is one of the most vibrant towns in southern Salento, in Puglia. Experiencing the Saint Anthony Festival here means immersing yourself in the authenticity of a community that, between the sacred and the profane, knows how to welcome guests and celebrate according to centuries-old tradition.
The 2026 patronal festival of Tricase (Lecce) opened on May 29th with the welcoming in Piazza Cappuccini of the restored statue of Saint Anthony and the relics arriving from the church of Saint Anthony in Lecce, followed by the daily tredicina of prayers until June 11th. The main days, from June 11th to 13th, combined liturgical solemnity and a great popular celebration in Piazza Cappuccini, with artistic illuminations, Apulian brass bands, evening concerts, and the traditional midnight fireworks display on June 13th.
Throughout the festival, Piazza Cappuccini is illuminated by the "Arte & Luce" artistic light displays.
The celebrations are held at the parish church of Saint Anthony and the Capuchin church, with the heart of the secular festival in Piazza Cappuccini, in the center of Tricase (LE).
By car: Tricase can be reached via the SS275 (Tricase exit) coming from Lecce and Maglie. By train: the Tricase station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est, with connections from Lecce. By plane: the reference airport is Brindisi-Salento, about 90 km away.
Participation in the festival, processions, and concerts in the square is free.
During the festival days, the center is crowded: it is advisable to arrive early for the procession and the midnight fireworks display, which is clearly visible from the surrounding streets.
