Two days of devotion, music, and folk traditions in the heart of Salento

In the village of Specchia, nestled among the olive groves of Lower Salento in the province of Lecce, the Madonna del Passo Festival is one of the community's most cherished devotional events. The celebration revolves around the traditional date of September 8th, the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, transforming the town into a tapestry of prayer, music, and Apulian folk tradition that involves entire families and the many emigrants who return for the occasion.
The spiritual heart of the festival is a small late 16th-century wooden panel (approx. 25 x 20 cm) depicting the Madonna and the blessing Child. According to scholars, the image, of Byzantine origin, represents "She who shows the Way" and is the oldest artistic testimony in Specchia. The recently restored icon is kept in a striking Basilian-style rock-hewn crypt, excavated about two and a half meters below street level. During the Second World War, the village mothers invoked the Madonna del Passo for the protection of their sons and husbands at the front, a testament to a devotion deeply rooted in the social fabric.
Specchia, recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, provides a setting of rare beauty for the festival: stone alleys, courtyards, the Risolo Castle, and the churches of the historic center serve as the backdrop for the celebrations. The event is organized by the Presentation of the Virgin Mary Parish together with the Festival Committee, with the support of the Municipality of Specchia and the Pro Loco.
As per the best Salento tradition, the festival alternates between liturgical moments and popular events:
The Madonna del Passo Festival is thus a perfect opportunity to discover the authentic soul of Salento, where popular faith merges with conviviality, great music, and the flavors of Apulian tradition.
At the moment, the official dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Madonna del Passo Festival in Specchia have not yet been announced. The festival is traditionally held in the days around September 8th, the day of the Nativity of Mary, and spans two days of religious celebrations, a market fair at the crypt, a flower festival, street performers, pizzica concerts, and the closing procession with a brass band and fireworks.
The detailed program is usually released by the Presentation of the Virgin Mary Parish and the Festival Committee in the weeks leading up to the event. We invite you to check the official channels for updates.
