A Marian festival in the heart of Salento

The Madonna del Carmine Festival is one of the most anticipated religious events of the summer in Andrano, a village in lower Salento in the province of Lecce, located just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast and the famous Grotta Verde. Every year, on the third Sunday of July, the Andrano community renews its devotion to the Virgin of Mount Carmel with a festival that weaves together popular faith, tradition, and village life.

Devotion and tradition

Devotion to the Madonna del Carmine is rooted in Carmelite spirituality and the cult of the scapular, which is deeply ingrained in the towns of Salento. In Andrano, the occasion is part of the calendar of festivals that mark the village's summer, alongside the patronal feast of the Madonna delle Grazie in early August and numerous traditional food festivals, such as the Sagra de lu taraddhru and the Salento Culinary Art Festival.

How it unfolds

The centerpiece of the festival is the procession that accompanies the statue of the Madonna del Carmine through the streets of Andrano's historic center, among the stone houses and narrow alleys of the village. The day is marked by liturgical celebrations, Holy Masses, and moments of prayer in honor of the Virgin. As is tradition in Salento patronal feasts, the streets are adorned with colorful illuminations, and the secular celebration complements the religious one with the accompaniment of a marching band and typical moments of conviviality.
