The festival of the two protectors of Castiglione d'Otranto, featuring faith, illuminations, and Salento traditions

In Castiglione d'Otranto, a small village in the municipality of Andrano in the province of Lecce, the Patronal Feast of Sant'Oronzo and Sant'Antonio is the most anticipated moment of the summer. For three days, traditionally held at the end of July and early August, the entire village is transformed: the streets are filled with illuminations, brass bands accompany the religious rites, and the community gathers around its two patron saints.
The devotion in Castiglione has a deep and curious history. Saint Anthony of Padua has been the protector of the town for over three centuries, but since 1743, his celebrations have been joined by those of Saint Oronzo. Tradition tells that when a terrible earthquake struck Salento and the Otranto area, sowing destruction in neighboring towns, Castiglione d'Otranto remained miraculously unscathed: the inhabitants attributed their salvation to the intercession of the saint from Lecce and elected him as their protector. Since then, the two saints have been celebrated together in a festival that weaves together faith, memory, and community.
The heart of the festival remains religious: the procession with the statues of the saints winds through the streets of the historic center, followed by the faithful and accompanied by a brass band. Around these rites, the popular side of the festival develops, with illuminations creating arches of light over the streets, brass band concerts in the bandstand in the square, and the inevitable fireworks that close the evenings. It is an authentic village festival, where the program changes from year to year, but the spirit remains the same: to gather, pray, and be together.
The festival is part of a busy summer for Andrano and its villages, featuring food festivals and traditional events such as the Sagra de lu taraddhru, the Santa Maria Maddalena Fair, and the local Rioniadi. Experiencing the Feast of Sant'Oronzo and Sant'Antonio means stepping into the slow, warm rhythm of Lower Salento, just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast and the villages of the Capo di Leuca, in a corner of Puglia where the patronal tradition is still a living ritual of the people.
The Patronal Festival Committee of Castiglione d'Otranto has not yet released the detailed program for the 2026 edition. Based on tradition, the feast of the two protectors Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Oronzo is divided into three days between the end of July and the beginning of August, with liturgical celebrations, a procession of the statues, illuminations in the historic center, brass band concerts, and fireworks. The official calendar with dates and events will be published closer to the summer.
