A festival that fills the void between Christmas and Carnival

In the heart of the Subequana Valley, perched on a hill in the province of L'Aquila, the village of Castelvecchio Subequo celebrates the Saint Anthony Abbot Festival every year in mid-January. The saint, a 3rd-century anchorite who lived in the Egyptian desert, is revered as the protector of animals, farmers, and livestock breeders. It is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in the Abruzzese farming calendar, keeping the community spirit alive during the period between the Christmas holidays and Carnival.

The singers and the house-to-house visits

The most characteristic moment is the questua (traditional collection) by the singers, who visit the village homes between January 16th and 17th. In Castelvecchio, the tradition—revived with particular care in recent years—involves the so-called Compari di Sant'Antonio, artists from nearby Sulmona, accompanied by the parish priest. The procession also reaches the local school and the retirement home, bringing songs, well-wishes, and a sense of community.

The performance of Good and Evil

The symbolic heart of the festival is the dramatized performance of the clash between Saint Anthony and the Devil: an eternal duel between Good and Evil that the actors perform using texts passed down orally. In the Castelvecchio Subequo version, the Saint is not just patient and resilient; he becomes reactive and strikes back, echoing the iconography of the victory of good and the proud history of the people of the Marsica and Peligna areas.

Fire and the blessing of the animals

The celebration concludes with the lighting of a large bonfire in the square adjacent to the Town Hall: around the fire, a ritual element that unites the sacred and the profane, the community gathers at the foot of the snow-capped Mount Sirente. The parish priest imparts the traditional blessing of the animals, a gesture that recalls the ancient bond between the saint and the rural world. The Pro Loco cooks and offers local products to all participants, while regional folk music accompanies the evening.

A village with ancient roots

Castelvecchio Subequo, located in the Sirentina mountain community, preserves Roman and Early Christian remains, the convent and Church of San Francesco (consecrated in 1288), and the catacombs of Superaequum. In this context, the Saint Anthony Abbot Festival represents a precious piece of Abruzzo's intangible heritage, a rite of faith and community that draws residents and visitors to the village every January.
