The December 6th patronal feast and the Christmas village between Tione degli Abruzzi and Goriano Valli

In the heart of the L'Aquila Apennines, at the foot of the Sirente-Velino massif, the small municipality of Tione degli Abruzzi (province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo) dedicates its patronal feast on December 6th to Saint Nicholas, the patron of the ancient parish church documented as early as the late 14th century. It is the most traditional and heartfelt event for the community, which gathers every year around its protector in a village with just over two hundred inhabitants.
In recent years, the religious observance has intertwined with the Christmas event "A Village for Christmas", which extends the festivities from the main town to the hamlet of Goriano Valli. The result is a small, widespread Christmas village that brings the streets and squares of the Tione area to life with stalls, handicrafts, sweets, herbal teas, and typical products from the Abruzzo mountains.
The day of December 6th combines devotion with festive cheer. In Tione degli Abruzzi, the Feast of Saint Nicholas begins in the morning, continues in the afternoon with Holy Mass and a procession through the village streets, and culminates in a mini Christmas village enlivened by bagpipers and the distribution of gifts to children.
The event dedicates ample space to discovering local heritage through guided tours of the MuDi, the museum that tells the history and traditions of the valley, and through food and wine tasting sessions that highlight the flavors of the L'Aquila mountains. It is a way to combine faith, culture, and conviviality in one of the most evocative villages of the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park.
Far from the crowds, the Feast of Saint Nicholas and "A Village for Christmas" offer an intimate and genuine experience: the possibility of snow on the mountains, the warmth of the community, the scent of mulled wine, and the music of the bagpipes create an atmosphere that recalls the deeper meaning of the holidays. An invitation to discover Tione degli Abruzzi and Goriano Valli, authentic corners of inland Abruzzo.
