Autumnal flavours, woodlands, and traditions in the village of Introdacqua
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the small village of Introdacqua, nestled in the Sagittario Valley in the province of L'Aquila and listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, the Thanksgiving Festival is one of the most authentic and deep-rooted autumn events in the Abruzzo tradition. The festival revives the ancient rural custom where farmers and artisans would thank the earth and the heavens for a bountiful harvest, transforming it into a community celebration that brings the village streets and squares to life every year.
The heart of the festival is Piazza Cavour and the entire historic centre of Introdacqua, where food stalls and booths dedicated to ancient crafts, local produce, and vintage photography are set up. Traditional Abruzzese cuisine takes centre stage: legume soup, polenta with vegetables, chitarrina alla matriciana, pork rinds and beans, arrosticini, fried pizzas, yellow pizza with bacon and pumpkin, roasted chestnuts, local desserts, and mulled wine keep visitors company throughout the day.
Beyond the culinary delights, the Thanksgiving Festival offers guided hikes in the woods surrounding the village, such as the "From Valley to Valley" trail, designed to help visitors rediscover the autumnal landscape of the Peligna mountains. There are also artisan markets, displays of traditional crafts and local products, historical photo exhibitions, and performances by folk groups and traditional musicians that accompany visitors through the streets of the centre.
The event, organized by the Associazione Culturale Futura Introdacqua with the patronage of the Municipality of Introdacqua, stands out for its strong environmental commitment: it is plastic-free and uses a token system (virtual currency) instead of cash for purchases to reduce waste. The festival also serves as a model of integration, actively involving new residents in its organization. Set against the backdrop of the Valle Peligna in Abruzzo, it attracts thousands of people each year, cementing its reputation as a cherished showcase of the region.
The dates and programme for the 2026 edition of the Introdacqua Thanksgiving Festival have not yet been released. Based on previous editions, the festival usually takes place over a weekend in November, with its epicentre in Piazza Cavour and the historic centre. We expect the return of food stalls featuring traditional Abruzzese cuisine, guided hikes in the Valle Peligna woods, artisan markets, and performances by folk groups. For updated dates and details, please consult the official channels of the Associazione Culturale Futura Introdacqua.
Introdacqua is located in the Valle Peligna, just a few kilometres from Sulmona. By car, it can be reached via the A25 motorway (Pratola Peligna-Sulmona exit), then continuing towards Introdacqua. The nearest train station is in Sulmona, which is well-connected by bus and taxi.
Admission to the festival is free. For food and drinks, a token system (virtual currency) is used, which can be purchased at a central cash desk; unused tokens can be exchanged back for cash. Card payments (POS) are also accepted.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for the autumn mountain climate, especially if you plan to participate in the woodland hikes. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: please check the official channels of the Associazione Futura before planning your visit.
