The autumn celebration in the village of Secinaro, featuring chestnuts, mulled wine, and Peligna traditions
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Autumn Festival is the event with which the village of Secinaro, a small municipality in the province of L'Aquila nestled in the Valle Subequana, welcomes the arrival of the cold season. The event takes place in the late afternoon, when Piazza degli Eroiโthe heart of the village, with its characteristic circular layout and clock towerโis decorated with gazebos and autumn-themed displays, continuing into the evening with music and entertainment.
The absolute star is traditional gastronomy. Participants are offered the iconic dishes of mountain autumn: roasted chestnuts, pasta e fagioli, mulled wine, and local traditional desserts. A simple, genuine menu designed to warm up the cool highland evenings and bring residents and visitors together around the same tables.
Secinaro stands at an altitude of about 850 meters, in a dominant position on a hill at the foot of Monte Sirente, within the Sirente Velino Regional Natural Park. The territory preserves traces of the ancient Peligni superequani civilization and legends linked to the cult of Dionysus and the nymphs, while the medieval village is dominated by the parish church of San Nicola di Bari, built where the castle once stood. Nearby, you can also find the famous meteor crater, considered a unique site in Italy.
The Autumn Festival is organized by the Pro Loco Felice Santarelli of Secinaro, which manages the hospitality, decorations, and catering every year. More than just a food festival, it is a moment of social connection that strengthens the community's bond with its roots and the slow rhythm of mountain life, in a region, Abruzzo, where village festivals remain a living and shared cultural heritage.
Admission to the event is free. For updated dates and program details, it is advisable to follow the channels of the Pro Loco Felice Santarelli of Secinaro.
The 2026 Autumn Festival in Secinaro is expected, as per tradition, in October, but as of today, the Pro Loco Felice Santarelli has not yet published official dates or the program. The event is expected to confirm the established formula, with roasted chestnuts, pasta e fagioli, mulled wine, and traditional desserts in Piazza degli Eroi, enlivened by music and entertainment. We invite you to check the Pro Loco channels for updates.
Secinaro can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (Cocullo or Bussi-Popoli exit, then local roads through the Valle Subequana). The most convenient train station is Sulmona, followed by a bus connection. The village is about an hour from L'Aquila.
Access to the Autumn Festival is free; tastings are provided for guests by the Pro Loco.
As this is a mountain village at about 850 meters, evenings in autumn are cool: layered clothing is recommended. Nearby, the Sirente Velino Regional Natural Park is worth a visit, ideal for trekking.
