The historic autumn fair in the medieval village of Beffi, in the Subequana Valley
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Goat Fair is one of the most deeply rooted events in the Subequana Valley, in the heart of the province of L'Aquila. It takes place in the small medieval village of Beffi, a hamlet of the Municipality of Acciano, at the foot of its famous defensive tower and the castle that dominate the rocky slope overlooking the Sirente massif. Its origins are ancient: some sources trace it back to at least 1861, the year of the Unification of Italy, but in all likelihood, the tradition existed even earlier.
The fair began as an autumn trading opportunity: after the harvest, farmers had a little extra savings to face the needs of the long Apennine winter. Originally linked to the celebrations of the Madonna del Rifugio, the event became known as the Goat Fair because goats were the animals most frequently sold and traded during the day. Even today, the fair retains this rural vocation, celebrating the deep bond between the community and its land.
On the second Sunday of November, from early morning, Beffi fills with visitors. The typical program includes:
Beyond the market, the Goat Fair is an opportunity to discover the historical heritage of Beffi: the medieval Tower from the 11th-12th century, the remains of the castle, and the Church of San Michele Arcangelo open their doors to visitors. In recent editions, the event has been enriched with naturalistic and experiential attractions, from e-bike tours along the trails of the Subequana Valley to panoramic hikes, confirming the Municipality of Acciano's desire to promote an authentic and still little-known territory of inland Abruzzo.
The event is organized by the Municipal Administration of Acciano with the contribution of local associations, including the Aternostrum Association and the Proloco of Succiano, together with the local Alpini Group. The Goat Fair remains an event capable of attracting families and curious visitors from all over the region, a genuine way to experience Abruzzese folk traditions and the flavors of the Apennine autumn.
The program for the 2026 edition of the Beffi Goat Fair has not yet been published. Based on established tradition, the event should take place on the second Sunday of November in Acciano, in the Subequana Valley. For times, attractions, and the final program, it is recommended to check the official communications of the Municipality of Acciano.
