About San Martino Gagliano Aterno

Every year, around November 11th, the village of Gagliano Aterno celebrates its patron saint with the San Martino Patronal Feast. In the heart of the Province of L'Aquila, nestled among the mountains of the Sirentina Mountain Community, the local community gathers in Piazza San Martino for a day blending religious rites, music, folk traditions, and the convivial sharing of typical Abruzzese products. A heartfelt celebration, organized by the San Martino Committee, which renews the deep bond between the village and its patron saint every autumn.

The patron saint's festival of Gagliano Aterno

The San Martino Patronal Feast is the most cherished event in the calendar of Gagliano Aterno, a small mountain village in the Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo. Perched at an altitude of approximately 850 meters in the Valle Subequana, at the foot of the Sirente massif and within the Sirentina Mountain Community, the village venerates Saint Martin of Tours as its patron saint, celebrated on November 11th alongside Saint Anthony.

A tradition renewed every autumn

As is customary, the festivities are concentrated on the Sunday closest to the liturgical date of November 11th. The day combines religious observance with community spirit: the solemn Holy Mass and the procession featuring the saint's statue wind through the historic center, accompanied by a marching band, before giving way to moments of celebration and the convivial sharing of local products.

The heart of the festival: the Church of San Martino

The focal point of the celebrations is the Church of San Martino, overlooking the square of the same name at the highest point of the village. Documented as early as 1076 and rebuilt during the 14th century, the church houses an early medieval stone sculpture of the Madonna and Child and frescoes on the apse vault, some attributed to the school of Giotto: an artistic heritage that provides a sacred backdrop to the patronal feast.

Flavors and conviviality

As with many autumn patronal feasts in Abruzzo, San Martino is also an occasion for gathering around the table. The saint's feast day traditionally coincides with the season of new wine and chestnuts, and the community of Gagliano Aterno renews the ritual of sharing typical local products, featuring mountain cuisine dishes from the Valle Subequana and seasonal specialties.

An authentic village to discover

The San Martino Patronal Feast is also a precious opportunity to discover Gagliano Aterno, a village that preserves its medieval layout, castle, and a fabric of traditions still alive thanks to the strong sense of belonging of its inhabitants. Those visiting the village during these days will find a community gathered around its patron saint, in a corner of inland Abruzzo far from the routes of mass tourism.

The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is recommended to check the program with the Municipality of Gagliano Aterno and the San Martino Committee as November approaches.
