About Saint Anthony Abbot Bonfire

Every January 17th, the hamlet of Pantuliano in the municipality of Pastorano gathers around the great bonfire of Saint Anthony Abbot: a tradition blending rural devotion with village festivities. Following Holy Mass at the church of San Giovanni Evangelista, the massive bonfire is lit, followed by the blessing of the animals — donkeys, horses, and local family pets — along with folk dances, fire shows, and tastings of typical products from the Caserta region.

The Saint Anthony Abbot bonfire in Pantuliano

Every year on January 17th, the small hamlet of Pantuliano — located in the municipality of Pastorano, in the province of Caserta, Campania — gathers around a fire lit in honor of Saint Anthony Abbot. This is no staged tourist attraction, but a deeply rooted popular devotion passed down through generations, which the Pro Loco of Pastorano has brought back to the heart of village life.

The ritual takes place in the small square in front of the San Giovanni Evangelista church: first, the celebration of Holy Mass, then the lighting of the focone, the massive bonfire that bears this local name and remains lit while the community gathers around the flames.

Why the fire is lit

Tradition holds that Saint Anthony Abbot is the protector of the domestic hearth: according to popular legend, the Saint descended into the flames of Hell to rescue the souls of sinners. Hence the gesture of lighting the bonfire, a symbol of light and renewal in the darkest heart of winter. In a territory historically tied to shepherding and field work, that fire has always also been a plea for protection for the stable animals and the harvest of the coming year.

The blessing of the animals

The most anticipated moment is the blessing of the animals, which renews Saint Anthony's role as the patron saint of the farming world. Donkeys, horses — in recent editions, even Arabian breeds — and family pets are brought to the square by local residents. It is a simple, genuinely popular scene that speaks volumes about the continuity between the Pantuliano of today and its agricultural past.

Folk dances, shows, and local products

Around the bonfire, the evening continues with the most festive part: music and folk dances of the Campanian tradition, juggling and fire shows, and tastings of typical products from the Caserta area. Recent editions have featured the La Barca di Teseo association with its repertoire of folk dances, and performer Mario Rufino with his Snakes and Fire Show, a mix of juggling and exotic animals.

A memory from afar

The oldest inhabitants remember that, until the 1970s, the young people of Pantuliano would challenge each other on January 17th by throwing cetrangole, inedible bitter oranges: a ritual game believed to ward off evil and protect the community. The custom was later abandoned for safety reasons, but it remains in the oral history of the hamlet as one of the most characteristic features of the festival.

A few steps from the bonfire site lies the 15th-century chapel of Saint Anthony Abbot, consecrated in 1431 and annexed to the ancient church of Pantuliano: a tiny space of just four square meters, entirely frescoed with scenes from the Saint's life and figures of the Latin and Greek Church Fathers. It is one of the lesser-known artistic treasures of the province of Caserta and stands as a testament to the ancient bond between this community and Saint Anthony.

Who organizes the festival

The event is promoted by the Pro Loco of Pastorano in collaboration with the parish and the municipal administration. Participation is free and open to all: it is an evening designed primarily for families and those who wish to experience the less touristy, more authentic side of inland Campania, the ancient Terra di Lavoro.

Why it is worth attending

Those who arrive in Pantuliano on January 17th will not find a large event with stages and barriers, but a small square, a fire, the sound of tammorre drums, and the scent of local products. This is precisely the value of the festival: a winter ritual that remains community-sized, where the visitor is welcomed as a guest rather than a spectator.
