The patron saint festival of Sfruz, featuring blessed bread, traditional bell ringing, and local dialect comedy
Every February, the municipality of Sfruz, in the province of Trento, gathers to celebrate its patron saint, Saint Agatha, whose feast day falls on February 5th. Nestled at over 1,000 meters above sea level on the Predaia plateau in Val di Non, this Trentino-Alto Adige village has just over 380 inhabitants. For this reason, the patronal festival is much more than a religious celebration; it is the moment when the entire community reconnects and reaffirms its identity.
The devotional heart of the festival is the distribution of the 'Pane di Sant'Agata', the blessed bread offered to the faithful during Holy Mass. The tradition dates back to the 17th century: the community of Sfruz made a vow to the saint after a major fire from which the village believed it was saved through her intercession. Since then, every year, the blessed bread has served as a symbol of protection, gratitude, and trust in the patron saint, as well as a gesture of solidarity among neighbors. During the celebration, a precious 16th-century polychrome statue of the saint, carefully kept inside the Church of Saint Agatha—known for its Renaissance portal—is also displayed to the public.
The most characteristic and defining element of the festival is the Sbadoclar, the traditional festive bell-ringing performed in honor of Saint Agatha. In recent years, it has been the village youth who have taken it upon themselves to learn and carry on this custom, picking up the mantle from previous generations: a beautiful example of cultural heritage transmission in a small mountain community. The sound of the bells rings out immediately after Mass, accompanying the patronal festivities.
The religious observance is complemented by numerous evenings of comedy in the Noneso and Trentino dialects, hosted in the town's Multipurpose Hall. Local amateur theater groups (such as La Revodana from Revò or the R.A.L. from Rallo) stage performances that draw audiences from across the valley in an atmosphere of joy and conviviality. To complete the program, when snow conditions allow, outdoor activities like the sled race return, bringing back to Sfruz the simple pleasure of a mountain celebration.
The 2026 edition of the patronal festival of Sfruz combined devotion, tradition, and conviviality over several days in February. The religious heart of the festival was the Holy Mass with the distribution of Saint Agatha's Bread and the display of the 16th-century polychrome statue of the saint, followed by the Sbadoclar, the festive bell-ringing performed by the village youth and the Fire Brigade. The program was accompanied by evenings of comedy in the Noneso and Trentino dialects in the Multipurpose Hall and, after many years, the return of the sled race thanks to the snow that fell on the plateau.
