The patronal feast of the Assumption in the heart of Val di Non
In the heart of the lower Val di Non, the municipality of Ton celebrates its Madonna Festival every year around Ferragosto: the patronal feast dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, which falls on August 15th in the liturgical calendar. It is a time when the community, spread across the hamlets of Vigo, Toss, Masi di Vigo, and Castelletto, comes together for three days of festivities, from August 13th to 15th, united by devotion to the Assumption and the local spirit.
The festival takes place primarily in Vigo di Ton, the municipal seat nestled at an altitude of about 455 meters on the left side of the Noce stream, dominated by the unmistakable silhouette of Castel Thun. The manor, the historic residence of the noble Thun family who gave the region four prince-bishops, is today one of the most fascinating and visited castles in all of Trentino. At its feet lie the apple orchards that make the Val di Non famous, the land of apples par excellence.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in Vigo di Ton, whose first records date back to 1233. Inside, the building houses a valuable altarpiece attributed to the Venetian painter Francesco Guardi, an authentic artistic jewel that testifies to the ancient ties between the valley and Venetian culture. The religious program of the festival is built around the church and its solemn celebrations, with the Holy Mass of the Assumption as the highlight.
Alongside the religious dimension, the Madonna Festival in Ton is above all a community celebration organized with passion by the Pro Loco Ton. Over the three days, there are celebrations, musical moments, stalls with local gastronomic specialties, and opportunities for residents and vacationers to meet. It is the summer event that marks Ferragosto in this corner of Trentino-Alto Adige, where the village festival still retains an authentic and genuine character.
Attending the Madonna Festival in Ton means experiencing a Ferragosto away from the crowds, immersed in the orderly landscape of the Non valley orchards and in the shadow of a fairy-tale castle. An opportunity to discover an authentic corner of Trentino, between faith, popular tradition, and the warmth of mountain hospitality.
The Madonna Festival returns to Ton from August 13th to 15th, 2026, as indicated in the official calendar of events for the Municipality of Ton. For three days, from the Thursday to the Saturday of Ferragosto, the Pro Loco Ton organizes the patronal feast dedicated to the Assumption of Mary in Vigo di Ton, with religious celebrations at the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta and moments of celebration for the community. The detailed program for the evenings will be released by the Pro Loco in the weeks leading up to the event.
Ton is located in the lower Val di Non, in the Province of Trento. By car, it can be reached via the SS43 of the Val di Non, exiting towards Vigo di Ton; it is about 30 km from Trento. The nearest train station is served by the Trento-Malé-Mezzana railway (stops in the lower valley), with connections via local bus.
The patronal festival has free admission. Any expenses are only for the Pro Loco food stalls.
Combine your visit with a tour of Castel Thun and a walk through the apple orchards of the Val di Non, home to the famous Melinda apples.
