About Summer Sagra Polentara

On the weekend of mid-July, the historic center of San Costanzo, on the hills between the Metauro and Cesano rivers in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, hosts the summer rerun of the Sagra Polentara, the oldest sagra in the Marche region with over two centuries of history. The polenta is cooked as it once was in large copper pots, spread on wooden baskets, and seasoned with the traditional carters' ragù. Food stalls in Piazza Perticari, folklore groups, live music, markets, and entertainment for families: an authentic village festival with free admission that brings a ritual passed down through generations to the table.

The oldest sagra in the Marche, even in summer

The Sagra Polentara di San Costanzo is considered the oldest sagra in the Marche: it has surpassed 200 editions and has its roots in the 19th century. Traditionally held on the first Sunday of Lent, in March, for some years now the Pro Loco has decided to re-propose it in a summer version, with a rerun in July, to offer the numerous tourists from the Fano coast and those visiting the hinterland the opportunity to participate in this popular ritual. The summer version preserves the spirit of the original intact: the absolute protagonist is polenta, cooked according to the ancient recipe of the master carters.

The heart of the event is the preparation of polenta as it was done in the past. Corn flour is cooked over a high flame in large copper pots, stirred for a long time, and then spread on characteristic panare, large wooden platters. The polenta is then seasoned with the traditional ragù, a recipe passed down through generations. This custom was revived at the beginning of the 20th century by the carters of San Costanzo, who stopped in the village during their long journeys: from that convivial gesture, the sagra was born, which still attracts thousands of visitors today.

A festival in the historic center

The sagra enlivens the historic center of San Costanzo and particularly Piazza Perticari, overlooked by the civic tower, the collegiate church, and the ancient Malatesta walls. Around the Pro Loco's food stalls, a rich supporting program unfolds: performances by folklore groups, live music, art exhibitions, enthusiasts' gatherings, craft and hobby markets. There is no shortage of activities for children, with creative workshops, face painting, carousels, and shows, making the Sagra Polentara an event for all ages.

Between the Metauro and Cesano valleys

San Costanzo is a small municipality of about 5,000 inhabitants in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the Marche region, perched on a hill 150 meters above sea level between the Metauro and Cesano valleys, in the immediate hinterland of Fano. The summer sagra is therefore also an excellent opportunity to discover a village rich in history, a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast beaches, and to savor the authentic hospitality of a community that proudly preserves its traditions.

The 220th edition of the Sagra Polentara returns in its summer format on Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, 2026, in the historic center of San Costanzo. Two evenings dedicated to polenta cooked in copper pots and seasoned with the carters' ragù, accompanied by food stalls, live music, folklore groups, and entertainment for families in Piazza Perticari.

2026 Summer Edition (220th)

The 220th Sagra Polentara in its summer rerun is scheduled for the weekend of July 18 and 19, 2026 in San Costanzo (PU), as announced by the municipal tourist portal. This year again, the Pro Loco San Costanzo brings back the ritual of polenta cooked in large copper pots, spread on panare, and seasoned with the traditional ragù to the historic center.

The detailed program for the 2026 edition (stall opening hours, performances, music, and side events) will be published by Pro Loco San Costanzo closer to the event on their official channels. Based on previous editions, evening food stalls, folklore group performances, live music, markets, and activities for children are expected.
