The rockiest summer festival in Canale Monterano, featuring wild boar, live music, and local tradition
The Sagra der Cignale is one of the most beloved gastronomic events in the municipality of Canale Monterano, a small village in the province of Rome overlooking the Tuscia region in Lazio. Every year, on the second weekend of July, Piazza della Carraiola comes alive with food stalls, musical stages, and open-air dining, drawing visitors from across the Monti Sabatini area and Lake Bracciano.
The festival was founded in 2008 to give a culinary soul to the historic Festa di Contrada, which has been organized by the Nobile Contrada Carraiola since 1976. Over the years, the event has grown into one of the most recognizable summer festivals in the territory, earning the nickname "the rockiest festival" of the Roman summer due to the quality of the concerts and guests that animate the three evenings.
The true king of the festival is wild boar, cooked according to traditional Lazio peasant recipes. At the tables set up in the square, you can enjoy dishes such as wild boar cold cuts, pappardelle and gnocchi with wild boar ragรน, stew, and roast with porcini mushrooms, not to mention the famous supplรฌ. For those who prefer, there are also alternative options like hamburgers, hot dogs, mixed fried food, and other specialties, all accompanied by wine, beer, and street food.
The Sagra der Cignale is also the perfect opportunity to discover Canale Monterano and its surroundings. A short distance away is the Monterano Regional Nature Reserve, with the fascinating ghost town of Monterano Antica, its ruins nestled in the woods, waterfalls, and landscapes that have served as sets for numerous films. A perfect combination of good food, music, and nature in the heart of Lazio.
From July 10 to 12, 2026, Canale Monterano hosted a new edition of the Sagra der Cignale, organized by the Nobile Contrada Carraiola in Piazza della Carraiola. Three nights of gastronomy, music, and community, with a rich program of concerts and activities for all ages.
The absolute star was wild boar, served in numerous traditional Lazio preparations, accompanied by an alternative menu for those who prefer other options.
Canale Monterano is located in the province of Rome, in the Monti Sabatini area. By car, it can be reached via the Via Braccianese or Via Aurelia, continuing towards Manziana and Canale Monterano. By train, the reference station is Manziana-Canale Monterano on the Rome-Viterbo line, followed by a short bus or car ride.
The festival takes place on the evenings of the second weekend of July. Admission to the festival area is free; you only pay for what you consume at the food stalls. The stalls generally open in the early evening and music continues until late at night.
We recommend arriving early to find a seat at the tables on the busiest Saturday and Sunday nights. For the updated program, it is best to follow the social media channels of the Contrada Carraiola.
