The handmade pasta festival in Canale Monterano

The Pappardelle Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Canale Monterano, a small town in the province of Rome nestled between the Tolfa Mountains and overlooking the evocative Monterano Regional Nature Reserve, home to the ruins of an ancient ghost town. Every year, in early August, the event transforms Piazza del Campo into a great gathering of taste and conviviality, attracting residents and visitors from the entire district.

A symbolic dish of tradition

The absolute stars of the festival are the pappardelle, wide strips of egg pasta rolled by hand according to the local Lazio farming tradition. The food stalls, set up by the volunteers of the Contrada Centro, offer the signature dish in its many variations: the famous pappardelle with wild boar ragù, in both white and tomato versions, as well as tomato and basil, amatriciana, and special variations that change each evening. To complete the menu, there is no shortage of local main courses, such as stewed tripe, wild boar stew, and mixed grilled pork, accompanied by side dishes, wine from the Tolfa Mountains, and craft beer.

Live music and the night of San Lorenzo

Alongside the gastronomy, the festival offers a rich program of live music and dancing in the square every evening: nights dedicated to singer-songwriters and DJ sets, tributes to great Italian music performers, and rock band concerts enliven the historic center until late at night. The event takes place during the night of San Lorenzo, when the clear sky of the Tolfa Mountains becomes the ideal setting for watching shooting stars at the end of the evenings.

Canale Monterano and the Roman Tuscia

Attending the Pappardelle Festival is also an opportunity to discover Canale Monterano and its territory, halfway between Lake Bracciano and the hills of the Roman Tuscia.
