About Pizzole Festival

Every August, the lakeside village of Anguillara Sabazia on Lake Bracciano celebrates its most delicious specialty: the pizzola, a fried pizza dough pocket, served sweet or savory, made with water, flour, and hot oil. In the charming Giardini del Torrione, in the heart of the historic center, the Rione Castello hosts two evenings of food stalls, live music, karaoke, and entertainment for all ages. An authentic, free-entry popular festival that blends culinary tradition with conviviality in one of the most fascinating locations in the province of Rome.

The Pizzole Festival in Anguillara Sabazia

In the heart of summer, when Lake Bracciano reflects the sunset, the historic center of Anguillara Sabazia becomes the stage for one of the most beloved festivals in the region: the Pizzole Festival. Organized by the Rione Castello of Anguillara, the event takes place every year at the Giardini del Torrione, one of the most picturesque corners of the medieval village overlooking the lake, in the province of Rome, Lazio.

What are pizzole?

The undisputed star of the festival is the pizzola (plural pizzole), a specialty typical of Anguillara Sabazia. It is a fried pizza made with a few simple, genuine ingredientsโ€”water, flour, and hot oilโ€”and filled in a thousand ways, both in savory and sweet versions. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, the pizzola encapsulates the local rural and lakeside heritage, prepared fresh by Rione volunteers according to a recipe passed down through generations.

Two evenings of celebration

The festival spans two evenings, usually during the first weekend of August. With food stalls opening in the late afternoon, the Giardini del Torrione fill with aromas and people: you can dine outdoors, stroll among the stalls, and stay late into the night to the rhythm of the music. The program alternates between live musical entertainment, karaoke, amateur shows, and activities designed for families, children, and visitors of all ages.

  • Typical cuisine โ€” sweet and savory pizzole prepared on the spot, along with other local specialties;
  • Live music โ€” concerts, DJ sets, and karaoke accompanying the evenings;
  • Shows and entertainment โ€” amateur performances, games, and entertainment for the little ones;
  • Setting โ€” the Giardini del Torrione in the historic center, just a stone's throw from Lake Bracciano.

Anguillara Sabazia and Lake Bracciano

Perched on a promontory extending into the waters of Lake Bracciano, Anguillara Sabazia is one of the most picturesque borghi in northern Lazio. Its maze of medieval alleys, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, and the views of the lake provide the ideal backdrop for a festival that is both a gastronomic appointment and an opportunity to discover the area, between Trevignano Romano and Bracciano. The Pizzole Festival is much more than just a food event: it is the living expression of the Rione Castello community and its popular traditions.

A free-entry festival

The event is free to enter: you only pay for what you eat and drink at the stalls. A convivial occasion accessible to everyone to savor the authentic cuisine of Anguillara Sabazia during one of the most anticipated summer evenings on the local calendar.
