The Rione Castello gastronomic festival in Anguillara Sabazia, on Lake Bracciano
In the heart of summer, when Lake Bracciano reflects the sunset, the historic center of Anguillara Sabazia becomes the stage for one of the most beloved festivals in the region: the Pizzole Festival. Organized by the Rione Castello of Anguillara, the event takes place every year at the Giardini del Torrione, one of the most picturesque corners of the medieval village overlooking the lake, in the province of Rome, Lazio.
The undisputed star of the festival is the pizzola (plural pizzole), a specialty typical of Anguillara Sabazia. It is a fried pizza made with a few simple, genuine ingredientsโwater, flour, and hot oilโand filled in a thousand ways, both in savory and sweet versions. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, the pizzola encapsulates the local rural and lakeside heritage, prepared fresh by Rione volunteers according to a recipe passed down through generations.
The festival spans two evenings, usually during the first weekend of August. With food stalls opening in the late afternoon, the Giardini del Torrione fill with aromas and people: you can dine outdoors, stroll among the stalls, and stay late into the night to the rhythm of the music. The program alternates between live musical entertainment, karaoke, amateur shows, and activities designed for families, children, and visitors of all ages.
Perched on a promontory extending into the waters of Lake Bracciano, Anguillara Sabazia is one of the most picturesque borghi in northern Lazio. Its maze of medieval alleys, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, and the views of the lake provide the ideal backdrop for a festival that is both a gastronomic appointment and an opportunity to discover the area, between Trevignano Romano and Bracciano. The Pizzole Festival is much more than just a food event: it is the living expression of the Rione Castello community and its popular traditions.
The event is free to enter: you only pay for what you eat and drink at the stalls. A convivial occasion accessible to everyone to savor the authentic cuisine of Anguillara Sabazia during one of the most anticipated summer evenings on the local calendar.
The ninth edition of the Pizzole Festival will be held on Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the Giardini del Torrione in Anguillara Sabazia (RM), with food stalls opening in the late afternoon and evenings featuring great food and music. Once again this year, the Rione Castello of Anguillara will offer the famous pizzole, the sweet and savory fried pizza pockets that are the symbol of the festival, accompanied by musical entertainment and activities for all ages.
The detailed program for the evenings (concerts, karaoke, and shows) will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event on the official Rione Castello channels. Admission is free.
