All the food festivals of the Picentini Mountains gathered in one square
The Sagra delle Sagre dei Picentini was born from an intuition of the Pro Loco of San Cipriano Picentino: instead of chasing the dozens of food festivals that animate the Picentini Mountains between spring and autumn one by one, why not gather them all together for a few days in the same place? The result is an event that, in just two editions, has already become one of the most anticipated food and wine appointments in the province of Salerno, in Campania.
The heart of the event is Piazza Umberto I, in the historic center of San Cipriano Picentino, which for the occasion fills up with stalls set up by individual associations: each brings its own signature recipe, the one prepared in their own town for their own local festival throughout the rest of the year. Around the square, the streets of the village come alive with exhibitions, workshops, and rest areas.
The most recent edition involved about twenty food festivals and over fifty traditional dishes, representing nine municipalities of the Picentini district and surrounding areas: Salerno, San Mango Piemonte, Castiglione del Genovesi, San Cipriano Picentino, Giffoni Sei Casali, Giffoni Valle Piana, Olevano sul Tusciano, Montecorvino Rovella, and Montecorvino Pugliano.
The official menu, published by the Pro Loco stall by stall, perfectly reflects the gastronomic geography of this slice of the Campanian Apennines:
Prices remain deliberately popular, roughly between 2 and 9 euros per portion, with the possibility of creating your own tasting tour by walking from one stall to another. There is also an offer dedicated to celiacs.
Two formulas make the visit more playful. The first is the food festival passport: a booklet to be stamped at every stall visited, which entitles you to a prize once a minimum number of stamps is collected. The second is the Picentini Gastronomic Contest, which pits the associations' dishes against each other for the title of «Best Dish of the Picentini», awarded by combining the public vote, a technical jury, and the so-called «Tavola delle Sagre» (Table of Festivals), composed of representatives of the participating associations. Alongside the main prize, awards are also given for «Chef's Dish», «Most Social Dish», and «Best Stall Setup».
The event's calendar complements the gastronomic side with a fairly dense cultural program: folk performances and evening concerts, historical re-enactments, thematic meetings, exhibitions, experiential workshops dedicated to traditional local preparations, and activities designed for children. During the event, the Civic Museum of San Cipriano Picentino also remains open.
Among the most successful initiatives is the Picentini Recipe Book, a collection of twenty-four recipes that reconstructs the history, flavors, and traditions of the involved communities, and the collaboration with Casa Giovanna, a historic local organization committed to inclusion, for a series of hand-painted ceramic plates dedicated to the participating towns.
San Cipriano Picentino is a small hillside town a handful of kilometers from Salerno, nestled at the foot of the Picentini Mountains massif, among chestnut woods and hazelnut groves. Its position makes it a convenient base for those who want to combine the festival with a walk in nature or a visit to the Amalfi Coast and the ruins of Pompeii, both reachable in a day. Participating in the Sagra delle Sagre therefore means getting to know an entire district in a few hours: not just a single town, but the network of communities that still keeps these recipes alive today.
After the success of its debut, the Sagra delle Sagre dei Picentini returned in 2026 with a format extended to four days, from June 11 to 14, and with a significantly higher number of participating associations. Piazza Umberto I and the historic center of San Cipriano Picentino hosted the stalls of the festivals of Salerno, San Mango Piemonte, Castiglione del Genovesi, San Cipriano Picentino, Giffoni Sei Casali, Giffoni Valle Piana, Olevano sul Tusciano, Montecorvino Rovella, and Montecorvino Pugliano.
The inauguration was held on Thursday, June 11 at 6:30 PM, in the presence of the mayor of San Cipriano Picentino, Sonia Alfano, and representatives of the involved municipalities, hosted by actress Carola Santopaolo, the event's godmother, and moderated by Francesco Barbarito, president of the City Council. The artistic direction was entrusted to Giuseppe Vernieri. The edition had been presented on May 31 in the ancient village of Terravecchia, in Giffoni Valle Piana.
The Picentini Gastronomic Contest awarded the title of «Best Dish of the Picentini» through the public vote, a technical jury, and the «Tavola delle Sagre», with the jury presidency entrusted to Chef Ruben. During the four days, the first Picentini Recipe Book, featuring twenty-four local recipes, was presented, along with the twenty-five ceramic plates created by master craftsman Raffaele Celano together with Casa Giovanna, dedicated to each participating community.
The complete menu, stall by stall and with the prices of each dish, was published by the Pro Loco on the event's official website.
