The festival of wine and peasant tradition of Castel Viscardo
The Sagra della Cannelletta in Castel Viscardo, in the Orvieto area of the province of Terni, is one of the most deeply rooted summer events in southern Umbria. The first edition dates back to 1966: it was created to support small local wine producers who struggled to sell the fruit of their vines wholesale. Since then, the sagra has never stopped, and in 2026 it will reach its 59th edition.
The "cannelletta" is the wooden tap used to dispense wine from barrels. A humble and everyday object, a symbol of the work in the cellars, it has become the emblem of the festival. It is no coincidence that the most anticipated moment is the opening parade, in which a float reproducing a large barrel decorated with vegetables and vine shoots parades through the village, accompanied by the G. Verdi Musical Band and costumed figures in traditional attire.
The heart of the sagra is the local cuisine. Every evening, at the refreshment stands, you can taste wines from local wineries along with dishes from peasant tradition: fried tortuccia according to the historic recipe, umbrichelli, pappardelle with wild boar, polenta and beans with pork rind, ham sandwiches, and wine doughnuts. A simple and generous table, to be accompanied by a glass of red wine or Vin Santo.
More than a tourist event, the Sagra della Cannelletta is a community celebration: it is organized by the Pro Loco of Castel Viscardo with the involvement of a large part of the citizenry. The evenings, enlivened by live music, transform the village squares into a large convivial gathering under the August stars, a few kilometers from Orvieto and the borders with Lazio and Tuscany.
The 59th edition takes place in Piazza IV Novembre and the streets of the historic center of Castel Viscardo, divided into two periods: from August 13 to 16 and from August 17 to 24. Every evening, refreshment stands offer wines from local wineries and traditional dishes (tortuccia, pappardelle with wild boar, local products), with live music to liven up the evenings.
The historic opening parade with the allegorical float of the large barrel, accompanied by the G. Verdi Musical Band and costumed figures, is confirmed. Admission is free every evening.
The 59th edition is divided into two periods in August 2026:
Every evening, in Piazza IV Novembre and the historic center, gastronomic stands are open with wines from local wineries and typical dishes (tortuccia, pappardelle with wild boar, polenta and beans, products from the Orvietano area), accompanied by live music.
The detailed evening-by-evening program, including the names of the musical artists, will be published by the Pro Loco of Castel Viscardo in the weeks preceding the event.
Castel Viscardo can be reached from Orvieto (about 15 km) by car, following signs for Castel Giorgio. The nearest train station is Orvieto, on the Rome-Florence line, from which you can continue by bus or taxi.
Access to the sagra is free. You only pay for what you consume at the refreshment stands.
The sagra takes place in August, in two distinct periods during the month.
