The chestnuts from the Val Nervia woods celebrate in Buggio
In Buggio, a hamlet of the municipality of Pigna in the province of Imperia, the Sagra della Caldarrosta celebrates the symbolic fruit of the Ligurian autumn. The roasted chestnuts come from the historic chestnut groves of Val Nervia, which for centuries have been a fundamental resource for the economy and cuisine of these mountain villages.
The absolute protagonists are the caldarroste (roasted chestnuts), distributed and fragrant throughout the village streets, accompanied by traditional dishes and local products. The sagra is one of the most heartfelt in the Imperia hinterland and attracts visitors from all over the valley.
Buggio, with its narrow alleys (caruggi) and stone houses, is one of the most characteristic centres of the Ligurian Alps Regional Natural Park. The Sagra della Caldarrosta is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic corner of western Liguria in the colours of autumn, far from the seaside tourism.
For 2026, the Sagra della Caldarrosta in Buggio is included in the calendar of Authentic Ligurian Events on October 11. The day offers the distribution of caldarroste (roasted chestnuts), traditional autumn dishes, and products from the historic chestnut groves of Val Nervia. The detailed schedule will be announced by the organizers closer to the event.
By car: from Ventimiglia, take the Val Nervia along the SP64 up to Pigna, then continue towards the hamlet of Buggio. Mountain roads, parking near the village.
