The re-enactment of transhumance in the Ligurian Alps, with costumed participants and a light-hearted goat race
In the heart of the Ligurian Alps, at over 750 metres above sea level in the upper Arroccia Valley, the Municipality of Mendatica (Province of Imperia) preserves one of the most fascinating traditions of the western Ligurian hinterland. The Corteo Storico delle Malghe re-enacts scenes and atmospheres of the ancient transhumant pastoral civilization, that of the Brigasco people who for centuries animated the pastures around Monte Saccarello.
The event begins in the morning with a market of producers and artisans in Piazza della Chiesa, accompanied by the opening of local museums and digital experiences dedicated to the area. At noon, the Pro Loco (local tourist board) offers a tasting of Cucina Bianca, the typical gastronomic tradition of the areas around Saccarello, made with dairy products, cereals, and mountain herbs.
In the afternoon, the historical parade takes place, with costumed participants re-enacting the descent of flocks and herds into the village. They are accompanied by the flag-throwers of Ventimiglia. The grand finale is the Palio delle Capre, a symbolic and light-hearted competition that festively recalls the role of pastoralism in the life of the community.
Promoted by the Municipality of Mendatica and the Pro Loco, with the patronage of the Liguria Region and the Regional Natural Park of the Ligurian Alps, the festival is recognised as one of the Ligurian Authentic Events. For visitors to the Imperia hinterland, it is the ideal opportunity to discover a mountain village that has made its pastoral identity a source of pride and hospitality.
For 2026, the appointment with the Corteo Storico delle Malghe is set for Sunday, September 20, as indicated in the regional calendar of Ligurian Authentic Events. The structure of the day follows the proven re-enactment format: a producers' market in the morning, a tasting of Cucina Bianca at lunch, the historical parade, and the Palio delle Capre in the afternoon with the flag-throwers of Ventimiglia.
The detailed hourly program will be released by the Municipality of Mendatica and the Pro Loco in the weeks preceding the event.
