Potatoes cooked in ashes, fried, and with peppers: three evenings of taste in Muro Lucano
Among the mountains of the Lucanian Apennines grows a potato with an unmistakable flavor, cultivated in the high-altitude lands around Muro Lucano. Every year, in September, the Pro Loco Murese dedicates the Sagra della Patata di Montagna (Mountain Potato Festival) to this product, an event that has become an attraction of extra-regional importance over time, drawing thousands of visitors to the town.
The absolute star is, of course, the potato, presented in all its most delicious versions: cooked in ashes, fried, served with 'peperoni cruschi' (crispy peppers) and 'porchetta' (roast pork). The dishes are prepared by local restaurateurs and served at stands set up for the occasion, in a culinary journey that highlights the authentic flavors of Lucanian peasant tradition.
The festival traditionally takes place over three evenings, with concerts animating Piazza Don Minzoni starting in the evening. Folk music, orchestras, and live bands accompany the tasting, creating the festive atmosphere that characterizes the late summer festivals of Basilicata.
Organized by the Pro Loco Murese APS, the Sagra della Patata di Montagna is an opportunity to discover Muro Lucano, the "nativity village" homeland of Saint Gerardo Maiella, and the Marmo Platano territory, amidst nature, gastronomy, and tradition. An event that combines the pleasure of food with the discovery of an authentic corner of Basilicata.
For 2026, the Sagra della Patata di Montagna is expected in September, continuing the trend of recent editions (the 2025 edition took place from September 19th to 21st). The event will again feature three evenings dedicated to mountain potatoes in Piazza Don Minzoni, with traditional dishes (cooked in ashes, fried, with crispy peppers and porchetta) and live concerts. The official dates will be announced by the Pro Loco Murese in the weeks leading up to the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Pro Loco Murese in the coming weeks. Based on the festival's established structure, the three evenings will include:
