The food and wine journey through the cellars dug into the mountain
Sant'Angelo Le Fratte, in the Province of Potenza, is known as "the village of cellars": dozens of caves dug entirely into Monte Carpineto, which overlooks the town, once used for aging and preserving wine. Once a year, in mid-August, these cellars open to the public and give life to Le Cantine, one of Basilicata's most beloved food and wine events.
The event is a fascinating journey through the alleys of the historic centre: from cellar to cellar, you can taste local wines, starting with Aglianico, accompanied by cheeses, cured meats, and typical Lucanian dishes such as cavatelli with 'pezzente' ragu. Each cave becomes a small corner of conviviality, where producers and local families welcome visitors in an authentic and warm atmosphere.
Tastings are intertwined with entertainment: street artists, live music, and craft exhibitions liven up the evenings. The backdrop is provided by the famous murals that decorate the village facades, making Sant'Angelo Le Fratte a true open-air museum. The combination of artistic heritage and food and wine tradition makes this festival a complete experience.
The event is organised by the Pro Loco of Sant'Angelo Le Fratte, which attracts thousands of visitors to the village every year. With over twenty-five editions, Le Cantine is now a classic of the Lucanian summer, capable of combining the discovery of the territory with the pleasure of good food.
From August 12 to 14, 2026, the 27th edition of Le Cantine di Sant'Angelo Le Fratte returns. For three evenings, the historic centre of the 'village of cellars' comes alive with the food and wine tour through the caves of Monte Carpineto: tastings of Aglianico and local wines, cheeses, cured meats, and traditional Lucanian dishes, all accompanied by live music, street artists, and craft exhibitions. Tasting evenings start at 8:00 PM.
The detailed program with musical guests will be released by the Pro Loco in the weeks preceding the event.
How to get there: Sant'Angelo Le Fratte is located in the western part of the province of Potenza, reachable by car from the Potenza-Sicignano junction.
Times: tasting evenings start at 8:00 PM.
Admission: access to the village is free; tastings in the cellars are paid for on site.
