The patronal festival of Tito, between faith, procession and Lucanian tradition
In Tito, a village in the province of Potenza overlooking the Basento valley, the patronal festival is dedicated to San Laviero Martire, a Christian soldier who, according to tradition, suffered martyrdom in the ancient Roman Grumentum in 312 AD. His figure has accompanied the religious and civil life of the Tese community for centuries, marking the calendar of the most important celebrations.
Devotion to San Laviero is articulated in several moments. On July 26th, the dedication of the new mother church, rebuilt after the 1980 earthquake and consecrated on this date, is commemorated. The major summer celebrations are concentrated in the first days of September, preceded by a solemn triduum of prayer and enlivened by processions, concerts, and shows. Finally, on November 17th, the liturgical memory of the saint's martyrdom is observed.
The most evocative moment is the procession with the statue of San Laviero, which winds through the streets of the historic center and the modern city, accompanied by the faithful, confraternities, and the band. The illuminations, fireworks, and musical performances in the square complete a program that intertwines the religious dimension with that of the popular Lucanian festival.
The patronal festival is part of the broader summer program of the Municipality of Tito, which throughout the warm months offers food festivals (sagre) and initiatives dedicated to the flavors of the region, such as ciambotta and strascinati. Visiting Tito during the days of San Laviero means coming into contact with the authentic soul of a Lucanian village, where devotion becomes an occasion for meeting and celebration.
In 2026, the patronal festival of Tito will focus, as is tradition, on the first days of September, with the triduum of preparation, solemn Eucharistic celebrations, and the procession with the statue of San Laviero through the historic center and the modern city. The anniversaries of July 26th, the dedication of the mother church, and November 17th, the commemoration of the martyrdom, also remain vibrant.
The detailed religious and civil program for the 2026 edition will be released by the Parish of San Laviero Martire and the Municipality of Tito in the weeks preceding the festival. The traditional structure includes:
