The Sagra dei Sughitti is one of the most heartfelt food and wine events in the province of Macerata and the entire Marche region. Every year, at the beginning of October, the medieval village of Montecassiano — listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy — transforms into a large, widespread stage dedicated to a simple, ancient dessert: 'sughitti'.
Sughitti are a type of sweet polenta prepared with grape must, cornmeal, and walnuts. It is a dish from the humble tradition, linked to the harvest period: in the past, peasants offered it as a gift to the local lords as a sign of a good harvest. Today, Montecassiano's 'sughitto' is recognized as a De.C.O. (Denominazione Comunale di Origine - Communal Denomination of Origin) product and represents a true symbol of the Municipality's identity.
During the sagra, the alleys, squares, and cloisters of the historic centre come alive with taverns and cellars where you can taste 'sughitti' and typical Marche dishes, accompanied by local wine. The program traditionally includes:
The Sagra dei Sughitti has been awarded the Sagra di Qualità (Quality Festival) mark by UNPLI (National Union of Pro Loco of Italy) and is often part of the Grand Tour delle Marche circuit and Tipicità initiatives. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Montecassiano with the support of the Municipality and attracts thousands of visitors to the Macerata village.
Amidst the autumn atmosphere, the elegance of the medieval village, and the aroma of freshly prepared 'sughitti', the sagra offers an authentic experience of Marche culture. It is the ideal opportunity to discover Montecassiano, taste a dessert that tells centuries of tradition, and immerse yourself in the folklore of the Macerata province.
The 2026 edition of the Sagra dei Sughitti is scheduled to take place in Montecassiano from Friday, October 3rd to Sunday, October 5th, 2026 (dates to be confirmed). This will be the 51st edition of one of the longest-running sagre in the Marche region, organized by the Pro Loco of Montecassiano.
As tradition dictates, the village will host taverns and cellars serving 'sughitti' and typical dishes, along with a parade of allegorical floats, the harvest re-enactment, craft markets, show cooking, musical performances, and entertainment for children. The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times and guests, will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
By car: Montecassiano can be reached from the SS77 or the Civitanova-Foligno highway, exit for Macerata, then follow signs for Montecassiano (about 12 km from Macerata). By train: Macerata station, then continue by bus or car. Nearest airport: Ancona-Falconara.
Access to the event and the historic centre is generally free; tastings in the taverns and cellars are subject to a charge according to the daily menu.
