The festival of Montefano's patron saint, between faith, tradition, and Marche flavors
The Festa Patronale di San Donato is the most anticipated event of the summer in Montefano, a small and intimate hilltop village in the Province of Macerata, in the Marche region. For several days, spanning the end of July and the beginning of August, the entire community comes together to honor its patron saint with a series of religious and civil events culminating on August 7th, the day the Church celebrates Saint Donatus.
Saint Donatus of Arezzo was a bishop and martyr: according to tradition, he was beheaded in the 4th century, and his cult spread rapidly throughout central Italy. The evocative Collegiata di San Donato, Montefano's mother church in Baroque style, built between the 12th and 13th centuries and rebuilt several times, is dedicated to him: inside, a fragment of the cross linked to the saint's martyrdom is preserved, a focal point of devotion during the festival days.
The festival combines the spiritual dimension with conviviality, following the best tradition of Marche patron saint festivals. Every evening, along Via Giacomo Leopardi and in the streets of the town center, you will find:
The festival is also a great excuse to visit Montefano, an ancient village of about 3,500 inhabitants perched at 242 meters above sea level, halfway between the Adriatic coast and the Apennine hinterland. Within its medieval walls, of which the tower of the ancient entrance remains, lie narrow alleys and red brick houses. Marcello Cervini, future Pope Marcellus II, was born here in 1501, and the charming Teatro la Rondinella, an 19th-century gem of the town, is located here. Participating in the Festa di San Donato means immersing yourself in the true identity of a Marche municipality, where tradition is still alive and deeply felt.
The 2026 edition of the Festa Patronale di San Donato in Montefano (MC) is confirmed and will culminate, as tradition dictates, on August 7th, the day of the patron saint's feast. This year again, the program includes food stalls and musical performances every evening along Via Giacomo Leopardi and in the historic center, alongside religious events in the Collegiata di San Donato.
The detailed schedule of the evenings will be published by the San Donato Patron Saint Festival Committee closer to the event: for updates on times, food stall menus, and musical guests, it is advisable to follow the organizing committee's official Facebook page.
