The festival of Macerata's patron saint

The Festa di San Giuliano e dell'Ospitalità is the most cherished event in the civil and religious calendar of Macerata, the capital of its province in the Marche region. It is celebrated every year on August 31st, the day dedicated to San Giuliano l'Ospitaliere (Saint Julian the Hospitaller), the city's patron saint, with celebrations spread throughout the last week of the month. It's a festival that intertwines the spiritual and popular dimensions: on one hand, the celebrations in honor of the saint; on the other, the grand fair and entertainment evenings that liven up the historic center.

San Giuliano l'Ospitaliere, a legend of hospitality

The devotion in Macerata is linked to the figure of San Giuliano l'Ospitaliere, a knight who, according to legend, after unintentionally killing his parents, dedicated his life to atonement by founding a hospice on the banks of a river with his wife, where he offered shelter to pilgrims and ferried them across the water. It is precisely this theme of hospitality that gives the festival its name and constitutes its identity value: the welcome extended to pilgrims, travelers, and, in modern times, also to delegations from twin cities. The date of August 31st dates back to 1513, when the celebrations were moved from January to the summer, considered more suitable for a richer and more participatory celebration.

The historic fair and gastronomic stands

The civil heart of the festival is the traditional fair, one of the oldest and most popular in the area, which fills the squares and streets of the center with several hundred exhibitors: Piazza Garibaldi, Viale Puccinotti, Viale Trieste, Piazza Nazario Sauro, Piazza Mazzini, Corso Matteotti, and the surrounding streets transform into a large open-air market with crafts, clothing, local products, and curiosities. Not to be missed is the gastronomic stand of the Pro Loco Macerata in Piazza della Libertà, where you can taste traditional specialties, particularly the tagliatelle with duck ragu, a dish historically linked to the patron saint's festival.

Religious rites and popular moments

The highlight is the solemn Holy Mass in honor of San Giuliano, celebrated by the Bishop of Macerata on the steps of the Duomo, followed by the procession through the city streets. Alongside the religious rites, the program includes musical evenings in Piazza della Libertà with cover bands and tributes, exhibitions in the historic center, and initiatives dedicated to families. A traditional event is the presentation of the terracotta whistle created each year by the CIF (Centro Italiano Femminile), a small collectible item whose subject changes with each edition and tells a piece of Macerata's identity.

A community festival

Organized by the Municipality of Macerata together with the Pro Loco, the Diocese, and city associations, the Festa di San Giuliano is much more than a religious commemoration: it is the moment when the Macerata community comes together, welcomes guests, and renews its bond with its history. Part of the 'Estate a Macerata' (Summer in Macerata) program, it represents the grand finale of the city's summer season.
