The festival of the «Scauzone»: procession, illuminations, and fireworks display in Mugnano di Napoli

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Festival is the main recurring event in the municipality of Mugnano di Napoli, located in the densely populated area north of the Campania regional capital. Every year, around the third Sunday of October, the town transforms for about ten days: illuminations are installed along Via Roma, in Piazza Suor Maria Pia Brando, and throughout the town center; balconies are decorated, and many people return to the town from outside the region for the procession and the fireworks.
It is not merely a devotional appointment. It is the moment when the Mugnano community reaffirms its identity through popular faith, brass bands, street food, and that pyrotechnic tradition which, in this part of the Neapolitan province, is a true artisan craft passed down from family to family.
At the center of the devotion is the statue of the Sacred Heart kept in the Sanctuary on Via Roma, linked to the figure of Sister Maria Pia Brando, who arrived in Mugnano in 1881 and promoted the monastic complex that grew around the work started by Father Vincenzo Orlando. The statue is known to everyone by the affectionate nickname o scauzone, meaning «the barefoot one»: according to tradition, the glass case protecting it broke twice and the sandals were found on the ground, a sign—so the local story goes—of the Sacred Heart's desire to walk closer to his people. Since then, the statue has remained without a case and without footwear.
The sanctuary is now entrusted to the Sisters Victim Expiators of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, who, together with the parish and the attached school, animate much of the religious program and the activities dedicated to children.
The highlight is the procession on the third Sunday of October. After the morning masses, the statue leaves the sanctuary and travels through the town's streets all day, accompanied by the clergy, religious sisters, the school children, civil authorities with the tricolor sash, and a crowd that follows while praying and singing. Along the route, the faithful set up small altars and prayer stations; in recent editions, the route has been made trackable via GPS, allowing people to know the statue's location in real-time.
The festivities are officially opened, however, by the descent of the statue from the altar a few days earlier: a highly attended and long-awaited ritual that marks the beginning of the festival week.
A rich civil program develops around the liturgical calendar, curated by the municipal administration together with the festival committee and local associations. Over the years, the program has featured:
The chapter that attracts the most visitors from outside is the fireworks. For years, the area near the fish market and the streets around Via Crispi have hosted a competition between national-level pyrotechnic firms, featuring pyromusical shows synchronized to music: an event that draws fireworks enthusiasts from all over Campania and beyond.
The same area traditionally hosts the fish festival at the fish market, one of the most crowded gastronomic initiatives of the festival, which is accompanied in some editions by tastings of local products and association stands.
Those who arrive in Mugnano di Napoli during the festival days will find one of the most authentic expressions of popular religious life in Campania: an entire municipality organizing itself around a statue with the same care used to prepare a great family celebration. It is an opportunity to understand firsthand the relationship between devotion, neighborhood identity, and spectacle that characterizes many patronal festivals in the Neapolitan hinterland—and to see some of the best Italian pyrotechnic masters at work in the evening.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus Festival in Mugnano di Napoli is celebrated every year around the third Sunday of October and spans about a week, from the descent of the statue from the altar to the closing evenings with music and fireworks.
For 2026, no official program has been published yet: neither the Municipality of Mugnano di Napoli nor the sanctuary on Via Roma has released dates, times, or guest names. In previous years, the civil program was presented in a press conference by the municipal administration a few weeks before the event, while the liturgical program is posted in town and distributed by the parish.
Those who wish to plan their visit can in the meantime refer to the recurring structure of the event: descent of the statue, days dedicated to children and schools, brass band concert in Piazza Municipio, Sunday procession through the streets of the municipality, fish festival at the fish market, and fireworks competition.
The heart of the festival is the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, at Via Roma 53 in Mugnano di Napoli (ZIP 80018). Civil events are mainly held in Piazza Municipio, Piazza Suor Maria Brando, and Piazzale Cesare Pavese; the fireworks are in the area of the fish market and Via Crispi.
Mugnano di Napoli is located a few kilometers north of Naples and can be reached by car from the main roads in the area north of the capital. On the days of the procession and the fireworks, many streets in the center are closed to traffic: it is advisable to arrive early and park in the peripheral areas of the town, then continue on foot.
The procession, concerts in the square, and fireworks displays are traditionally free of charge. Only amusement rides, food stands, and refreshments require payment.
