The patronal feast of Alia in honor of Mary Most Holy of All Graces
The Feast of Santa Maria delle Grazie is the patronal festival of Alia, a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Palermo nestled in the hilly landscape between the Sicilian hinterland and the Madonie mountains. The Marian cult of the Madonna delle Grazie has its roots in the very founding of the village: the origins of Alia date back to 1617, when Lady Francesca Cifuentes Imbarbara, widow of the Marquis of Santa Croce and baroness of the "Lalia" fiefdom, obtained the licentia populandi to populate the territory. It was by her will that in 1639, above a pre-existing chapel of the Crucifix, the sacred building dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie, proclaimed patron saint of the town, was erected.
The heart of the festival is the Sanctuary of Maria SS. delle Grazie, where the venerated effigy is kept all year round. The statue depicts the Virgin in the act of nursing the Baby Jesus, an image of maternal tenderness that the people of Alia affectionately call in the local dialect "bedda matri di tutti li grazi". For centuries, the community has gathered around this image in a bond of faith passed down from generation to generation.
The festivities extend over several days, alternating strictly religious moments with folkloric and entertainment events. The calendar begins in the last days of June with a busy schedule of liturgical celebrations, but the solemn day is July 2nd, the liturgical feast day of the patron saint.
More than just a religious recurrence, the Feast of Santa Maria delle Grazie is the moment when Alia rediscovers its identity as a community. Emigrants return to the village, families reunite, and the ancient traditions of popular devotion of the Madonie live again in the streets of the village. The date of July 2nd for the 2026 edition is confirmed; the detailed program of the festival days is announced by the parish in the weeks preceding the event.
The date of the patronal feast of Alia for 2026 is confirmed for July 2nd. As every year, the festivities in honor of Mary Most Holy of All Graces will span several days, with the highlight being the solemn procession of the Virgin's statue, carried on the shoulders of devotees — some barefoot for grace received — accompanied by confraternities and authorities.
The detailed program for each day, including mass times, the procession route, and the names of the artists for the evening shows, is traditionally released by the Parish of Maria SS. delle Grazie in the weeks leading up to the feast. This page will be updated as soon as the full calendar for the 2026 edition is made public.
