The Madonna della Luce Festival is the most important religious event in Roccapalumba, a small town in the hinterland of the Province of Palermo, in Sicily, also known as the "Town of the Stars" for its astronomical observatory. Every year, on August 23rd, the entire community gathers around its Sanctuary to honor the Virgin of the Light, the town's spiritual patron and the figure around whom local devotional identity revolves.
The heart of the festival is the Sanctuary of Maria SS. della Luce, located at the foot of the Rocca that dominates the town and defines its skyline. According to tradition, a shepherd found an image of the Virgin and Child in a crevice of the rock; every time they tried to move it, the painting miraculously returned to its place, a sign of the Madonna's desire to remain there. The place of worship was thus built on that site. The first written records date back to the late 17th century, while the current building was constructed in the 20th century and opened for worship in 1953. The high altar houses the precious 17th-century statue of the Madonna della Luce, an object of deep devotion.
The festival day follows a consolidated calendar of religious celebrations. Eucharistic celebrations are held at the Sanctuary throughout the day, usually in the morning and afternoon, leading up to the solemn Mass. In the evening, the most awaited moment takes place: the procession of the statue of the Madonna della Luce, carried on shoulders through the town center amidst the participation of the faithful, accompanied by prayers, hymns, and the town band.
Originally, the festival was celebrated in September; since 1945, it has been moved to August 23rd, partly to encourage the participation of emigrants returning to the town during the summer. This bond with the summer season and the return to one's roots makes the recurrence an identity-defining event for the entire Roccapalumba community. Between sacred rites and popular festivities, the day closes with moments of conviviality that enliven the town's streets. For those visiting this part of Sicily, the Madonna della Luce Festival is an authentic opportunity to discover the Marian devotion of the Palermo hinterland and the hospitality of a village deeply connected to its traditions.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna della Luce Festival in Roccapalumba will follow, according to tradition, the August 23rd recurrence, with celebrations at the Sanctuary of Maria SS. della Luce and the evening procession of the statue through the town streets. At the moment, the official program and detailed times have not yet been published. Information will be updated as soon as the parish and the Confraternity release the calendar of celebrations.
Roccapalumba is located in the hinterland of the Province of Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the SS121 Palermo-Agrigento road. The town is also served by the Roccapalumba-Alia railway station, on the Palermo-Agrigento line.
The festival is celebrated every year on August 23rd. The celebrations and the procession take place at and around the Sanctuary of Maria SS. della Luce, at the foot of the Rocca.
