The Lenten ritual of symbolic fire in Presicce-Acquarica
The Rito della Caremma is an event that blends theater, music, and folk memory in the courtyard of the Palazzo Ducale in Presicce-Acquarica, a town in the Province of Lecce that is part of the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Italy' network. Promoted by the Bottega della Memoria, Terramia Social Experience, and the Municipal Library, the event brings one of the most fascinating figures of Salento tradition back to the stage, transforming it into a poetic and participatory installation.
In the folk culture of Salento, the Caremma (or Quaremma) is a puppet representing a thin, stern old woman dressed in black as a sign of mourning for the end of Carnival. Traditionally, it was displayed on balconies and windowsills at the beginning of Lent, holding a spindle, a bitter orange, and some chicken feathers: one feather was removed each week, like a calendar marking the approach of Easter. Its name is thought to derive from the French Carรชme, a memory of the passage of transalpine soldiers through Salento, which later became the Italian word for Lent, Quaresima.
In Presicce-Acquarica, the Caremma becomes a metaphor for time that passes and consumes, but also for time that regenerates. The figure recalls the Fates of Greek mythology, guardians of the thread of life and destiny, and thus the ritual becomes a story of passage and renewal. At the highlight of the evening, the public is invited to a collective gesture: writing a fear, a burden, or something they wish to let go of on a piece of paper and entrusting it to the flames, in a fire that does not destroy, but transforms.
The event weaves together words, stage gestures, and musical accompaniment in an intimate and choral dimension. More than a show to watch, it is an experience to live: the community gathers, shares, and reflects. In this sense, the Rito della Caremma reaffirms the value of social bonds and collective memory, the heart of the work carried out by the Bottega della Memoria in the region.
Set in the evocative Palazzo Ducale, the ritual enhances an intangible heritage that belongs to all of Salento and Puglia. For those visiting lower Salento in the spring, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic Lenten tradition, far from mass tourism circuits, and to experience the quiet atmosphere of a village that carefully preserves its roots.
