The Riesi Summer Carnival turns tradition on its head: instead of a freezing February, it takes place on a warm August evening when the town of Riesi, in the province of Caltanissetta, dresses up for a party. As an integral part of the Estate Riesina program, the event brings a masked parade filled with color, music, and boundless imagination to the streets, bringing together people of all ages for one big town celebration.
The masked parade and Piazza Garibaldi
The highlight of the event is the masked parade, which sets off from the Liceo Carlo Maria Carafa and travels through the historic center, enlivening the streets with music and performances before reaching Piazza Garibaldi. Here, the evening reaches its peak with an awards ceremony for the groups and a dance party that keeps the whole town moving under the Sicilian summer sky.
The connection with Estagiosa
The Summer Carnival is closely linked to Estagiosa ('Young Salesians Summer'), an oratory experience promoted by the Basilica Maria SS. della Catena, which offers games, recreational activities, and moments of wholesome, inclusive fun over several evenings. The young participants of Estagiosa parade in fantasy-themed costumes, bringing to life striking characters that contribute to the evening's explosion of color.
