The Nativity comes to life in the alleys of the San Rocco parish in Gela
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Christmas season, the San Rocco parish in Gela, in the province of Caltanissetta, transforms into a large open-air nativity scene. Set up and brought to life by the parish community, the San Rocco Living Nativity reenacts the birth of Jesus through costumed actors, scenes of daily life, and the reconstruction of traditional Christmas settings. It is a deeply rooted local event that attracts families, curious onlookers, and visitors every year along the path near the church on Via Bramante.
The living nativity has always been an opportunity to showcase local ancient crafts, many of which are now disappearing. Along the path, visitors encounter artisans, scenes of rural life, and reconstructed workshops, all within an atmosphere that blends devotion with collective memory. The representation of the Nativity remains the focal point, with the Holy Family, shepherds, and characters from the Gospel story portrayed by members of the community.
The visit is accompanied by a Christmas market, where you can find handcrafted products, nativity figurines, sweets, and traditional holiday gift ideas. The market helps create the festive mood that characterizes the entire event, making it one of the most beloved Christmas highlights in Gela.
Organized entirely by volunteers from the San Rocco parish, the living nativity represents a moment of strong cohesion for the neighborhood and the entire city of Gela. More than just a show, it is a shared experience that, year after year, keeps the tradition of the Sicilian Christmas and the communal spirit of the holiday alive.
The event takes place during the Christmas season, typically between the second half of December and Epiphany, with evening openings at the San Rocco parish in Gela (CL), Sicily. Openings are usually concentrated on festive evenings.
The San Rocco Living Nativity is expected to return for Christmas 2026 in Gela, in the San Rocco parish district. As of today, the dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published: as in previous years, it is likely that the openings will be concentrated on festive evenings between the second half of December and Epiphany, featuring the Nativity path, ancient crafts, and the Christmas market. It is recommended to check for updates on the parish's channels.
