Carnival in the heart of Central Sicily

The Riesi Carnival is one of the most anticipated popular festivals on the winter calendar of this town in the province of Caltanissetta, nestled on the rugged hills of the Gela territory. True to Sicilian tradition, in the days leading up to Lent, the town comes alive with color, music, and imagination, transforming the streets of the center into a large open-air stage.

Allegorical floats and costumed groups

The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats and costumed groups, which wind through the streets of Riesi amidst confetti, streamers, and the enthusiasm of the crowd. The floats, often the result of weeks of work by local associations and citizens, feature satirical figures, fantasy characters, and current events, in keeping with the best Italian carnival traditions. The parade is accompanied by music and dancing in the square, making the Carnival a moment of shared celebration for the entire community.

A community celebration

More than just a show, the Riesi Carnival is a meeting point for the whole town: families, children, teenagers, and the elderly gather in the historic center to share joy and a sense of belonging. Founded in 1647 and linked for centuries to the history of the sulfur mines, the town of Riesi preserves a strong popular identity that resurfaces in its festivals. From the winter Carnival to the Holy Week celebrations, and the feast of the patron saint, Madonna della Catena, in September, the Riesi calendar tells the story of a community that lives its traditions intensely. The Carnival, in particular, is the moment when this festive spirit erupts with the greatest vitality, giving Central Sicily one of its most colorful occasions.

When it takes place

The Riesi Carnival is held, as per tradition, in the period preceding Lent, usually in February. The exact dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been made official: it is advisable to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Riesi for updates.
