An Epiphany celebration in the Sicani village, featuring shepherds, fresh ricotta, and folk theatre
The Ricotta Festival is one of the most heartfelt and defining events of Sant'Angelo Muxaro, a small town in the Agrigento hinterland, set in the heart of the Sicani Valley in Sicily. Celebrated for over sixty years on the occasion of Epiphany, the event turns the village into a vast open-air theatre where pastoral culture, popular spirituality, and traditional flavors merge into a single day of celebration.
The heart of the festival is the live preparation of ricotta. At dawn, shepherds lead their flocks from the countryside to the central Piazza Umberto I, where they set up their stations and begin working the milk in large copper cauldrons. Visitors are offered hot, freshly made ricotta, along with other local specialties like tuma cheese, ricotta cassata, and cannoli, in an experience that tells the deep bond between the community, the land, and ancient flavors.
In the afternoon, the Vastasata di Nardu e Riberiu takes the stageโa tragicomic folk play with roots dating back to the early 20th century. The two shepherds, Nardo and Riberio, upon hearing the news of the birth of Baby Jesus, seek a way to reach the Nativity, creating lively scenes and dialogues in the Sicilian dialect. The day also features the performance of Erodiade, including the Three Wise Men and the figure of the tyrant Herod.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover Sant'Angelo Muxaro, known for its rock-cut necropolises and the famous Grotta di Sant'Angelo (the so-called Tomb of the Prince), evidence of the ancient Sicani civilization. In recent years, the event has also been promoted as part of the 'roots tourism' project, under the name Mushar Roots Fest, inviting emigrants and their descendants to rediscover their origins in this authentic corner of inland Sicily.
The 66th edition of the Ricotta Festival, initially set for January 6, 2026, for Epiphany, was postponed to January 11 due to bad weather forecasts. The day, running from 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM, kicked off with bagpipers in the village streets and, at 10:00 AM in Piazza Umberto I, with the official inauguration, cake cutting, and the preparation of the ricotta.
In the afternoon, around 2:45 PM, it was time for the Vastasata di Nardu e Riberiu, followed at 3:00 PM by an equestrian stroll through the village streets. At 5:00 PM, the theatrical performance Erodiade was staged, while at 6:30 PM, the festival concluded with the procession of the Baby Jesus and the celebration of Mass. The event, organized by the Municipality with the Pro Loco and local associations, confirmed the strong identity appeal of this festival in the Agrigento hinterland.
Sant'Angelo Muxaro is located in the province of Agrigento, in the Sicani Valley. By car, it can be reached from Agrigento (about 30 km) or from Caltanissetta via the SS189 and internal provincial roads. The nearest airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino, approximately 100 km away.
The village centre is partially closed to traffic during the festival: it is recommended to leave your car in the parking areas at the entrance to the town and reach Piazza Umberto I on foot.
The event takes place in January: dress in layers and wear comfortable footwear for the historic centre's alleys. Tasting of ricotta and local products is free while supplies last. Don't miss a visit to the nearby rock-cut necropolises.
