The grand celebration of the Black Saint, co-patron of Agrigento, featuring processions, muffuletti tossed from balconies, and the Wheat Festival.
The San Calogero Festival is one of the most deeply felt traditions in the calendar of Agrigento, in the heart of southwestern Sicily. San Calogero, known as the Black Saint, is the city's co-patron alongside Saint Gerlando. According to local tradition, during a severe epidemic, the hermit monk traveled through the area begging for bread for the sick—an act of charity that remains at the center of Agrigento's collective memory and is still commemorated today through the ritual of the muffuletti.
The heart of the festival lies in the processions of the Saint's statue, which leaves the Sanctuary to be carried on the shoulders of devotees along the traditional route, from Via Atenea to Porta Addolorata, to the rhythm of tammurinara (drummers) and the local brass band. The most anticipated moment is the tossing of muffuletti from the balconies: these are traditional sesame and fennel seed bread rolls, blessed and thrown to the crowd as the statue passes, in memory of the bread the Saint distributed to the sick. Pilgrimages made barefoot to the sanctuary are also common, a sign of popular devotion passed down through generations.
The religious dimension intertwines with the Wheat Festival, featuring a striking offertory procession: a parade of richly decorated Sicilian carts, mules, and adorned animals, carrying ex-votos, local produce, and harvest fruits. It is one of the most photographed images of the festival, capturing the rural soul and identity of this part of the Agrigento province.
The festival has always coincided with the grand San Calogero Fair, which brings the city center to life, particularly along Viale della Vittoria. In recent years, the fair has been revitalized: the characteristic wooden stalls decorated with lights have returned, with exhibitors lining both sides of the avenue. The north side is dedicated to handicrafts and artistic creations, while the south side hosts packaged food products and gourmet specialties, with a selection that favors quality Sicilian artisans, creatives, and producers. Areas for children's activities and food trucks are located at Villa Bonfiglio.
The San Calogero Festival is celebrated in Agrigento on the first two Sundays of July, with the highlights occurring on the two processional days. The fair associated with the festivities runs for the entire duration of the event, transforming the city into a crossroads of faith, popular traditions, and the flavors of Sicily.
