The ephemeral architecture of San Biagio Platani transforms into contemporary art under the August sun
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In San Biagio Platani, a small village in the province of Agrigento nestled in the Platani Valley, the tradition of ephemeral architecture is not limited to the famous Holy Week. Every August, along Corso Umberto I, the Archi d'Estate festival brings the same craftsmanship that shapes the monumental Easter Arches to the heart of summer.
The event was established in 2023 as a natural summer extension of this heritage: local artisans reinterpret traditional techniques and materials in a contemporary key, creating a series of open-air art installations along the village's main street. It is a journey that blends memory and experimentation, where the ancient knowledge of the Easter arches meets new artistic languages.
Archi d'Estate is part of the RiGenerAzioni Archi di Piano 2030 project, funded by the PNRR as part of the village regeneration calls promoted by the Ministry of Culture. The central theme is reuse: many works recover materials from previous editions of the arches and reintroduce them into new installations, following a logic of sustainability and the enhancement of local culture.
The installations address themes ranging from Sicilian peasant memory to civil rights, from motherhood to the fight against gender-based violence, weaving the island's folklore with highly relevant contemporary messages.
During the exhibition days, Corso Umberto I comes alive with a program of side events: talks, concerts, and tastings of typical products from the Platani Valley, with extra virgin olive oil and pistachios standing out. The initiative is also linked to the tradition of local bread, an integral part of the identity of this Agrigento village.
For visitors, Archi d'Estate is an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of inland Sicily, far from mass tourism circuits, where folk art becomes a shared experience for the entire community.
At the moment, the Municipality of San Biagio Platani has not yet released the official dates and program for the 2026 edition of Archi d'Estate. As this is a recurring event included in the multi-year RiGenerAzioni Archi di Piano 2030 project funded by the PNRR, a new appointment is expected during the summer period, presumably in the first half of August as in previous editions.
The ephemeral art installations are expected to return to animate Corso Umberto I in the Agrigento village, accompanied by the usual side events of talks, concerts, and tastings of typical Platani Valley products. The detailed program will be published on the Municipality's channels closer to the event.
San Biagio Platani is located in the inland Agrigento area, in the Platani Valley. By car, it can be reached from the SS189 Agrigento-Palermo road by taking the exit towards Valle del Platani; the village is about 40 km from Agrigento. The nearest train station is in Agrigento, from where you can continue by car or local bus lines.
The event traditionally takes place in the first half of August, with installations visible along Corso Umberto I.
The installations are exhibited outdoors and can be visited freely along the village's main street.
For the updated program, it is advisable to check the official channels of the Municipality of San Biagio Platani.
