Two days of tastings, cheeses, and traditions in the heart of the Sicani Mountains
The Quisquina Cheese and Local Products Festival, now also promoted as the Quisquina Cheese Festival, is one of the most cherished events in Santo Stefano Quisquina, a village in the Sicani Mountains in the province of Agrigento, in the heart of Sicily. For over twenty years, at the end of May, the town has transformed its historic center into a grand culinary journey dedicated to local dairy products, renowned for centuries for their intense aromas and unmistakable scents derived from the use of the territory's spring waters.
The heart of the festival lies in the traditional cheeses of Santo Stefano, the result of ancient knowledge passed down through generations. Among the stalls in the historic center, visitors can taste and purchase:
Alongside the cheeses, there is space for artisanal sweets, baked goods, and other gastronomic delights from the Sicani Mountains.
The event is not just a product showcase but an experiential journey: taste workshops and guided tastings with industry experts, demonstrations of milk transformation into quagliata and ricotta, and cooking shows featuring prominent chefs and pastry chefs. Recent editions have hosted a cooking show by Valeria Raciti, winner of MasterChef Italia, and spectacular preparations like the giant ricotta cake.
The two days are enlivened by music and folklore: the Tamburi della Quisquina lead parades through the village streets, while groups like Sikania Folk and traveling bands accompany visitors among the stalls. In the evening, there is space for singer-songwriter music and cabaret. During the festival, guided tours of the village and sites linked to Saint Rosaliaโthe convent, the sanctuary, and the hermitage of Quisquina, a pilgrimage destinationโare organized by the Pro Loco and young guides from the local school.
Organized by the Municipality of Santo Stefano Quisquina with the Pro Loco and local associations, the festival is sponsored by the regional Department of Tourism and the regional Department of Agriculture. Access is free and open to all: the event is a true community celebration that highlights the identity, hospitality, and products of the Agrigento hinterland, attracting a large number of visitors every year.
The 2026 edition of the Quisquina Cheese Festival brought the historic center of Santo Stefano Quisquina to life for two days dedicated to the dairy excellence of the Sicani Mountains.
Saturday, May 30 opened with a sensory trail and "Discover Quisquina" outdoor activities (from 10:30 AM), cheese tastings, and quagliata demonstrations in the historic center, followed by an evening in Piazza Madrice with tastings (8:00 PM) and a concert of singer-songwriter music by Antonio Modica Live (10:00 PM).
Sunday, May 31, after the opening with the Tamburi della Quisquina (9:30 AM) and guided tours "In the Footsteps of Saint Rosalia" toward the convent, sanctuary, and hermitage (10:00 AM), the day featured food stalls, tastings, and educational workshops, the cooking show by Valeria Raciti, winner of MasterChef (4:30 PM), performances by Sikania Folk and traveling bands, and in the evening, the cabaret show by Stefano Piazza with "4 Cianchi in Padella" (9:00 PM).
Santo Stefano Quisquina is located in the Sicani Mountains, in the province of Agrigento. By car, it can be reached via the SS118 and provincial roads connecting the Agrigento hinterland; the nearest airports are Palermo (Punta Raisi) and Catania-Fontanarossa, both about a two-hour drive away. The reference train station is Agrigento, from where you can continue by bus or car.
The festival takes place at the end of May over two days (Saturday and Sunday), with stalls and tastings in the historic center. Access is free; costs apply only to purchases and tastings at the stalls.
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes for walking through the village and taking advantage of the guided tours to the sanctuary and the hermitage of Quisquina, sites associated with Saint Rosalia.
