About Prosciutto al Borgo Festival

Every summer, the village of Villa Romagnoli, a hamlet of Mozzagrogna in the heart of the Chieti province, comes alive with the Prosciutto al Borgo Festival, one of the longest-running and most beloved gastronomic events in the Sangro Valley. Organized by the Pro Loco Romagnoli, the festival has surpassed thirty-seven editions, transforming the alleys and Piazza della Vittoria into a tasting trail dedicated to local prosciutto, ventricina, arrosticini, and regional wines, all accompanied by live music and the convivial atmosphere of an Abruzzo village.

The Prosciutto al Borgo Festival in Villa Romagnoli

The Prosciutto al Borgo Festival is a staple of the summer season in Villa Romagnoli, a small hamlet in the municipality of Mozzagrogna, in the province of Chieti, nestled in the heart of the Sangro Valley in Abruzzo. Established in the late eighties and now boasting over thirty-seven editions, it is one of the most deeply rooted festivals in the region, organized with passion by the Pro Loco Romagnoli.

The village turns into a feast

The heart of the event is Piazza della Vittoria and the village alleys, which for one night transform into a large open-air food and wine trail. The formula, which has remained faithful over time, combines the authenticity of local products with the typical hospitality of small Abruzzo towns, where the entire community participates in organizing the event.

The star ingredients

At the center of the festival is, naturally, the local prosciutto, served in the traditional combination of bread and ham, but the table is enriched with many other Abruzzo delicacies:

  • Prosciutto and melon, a classic summer pairing
  • Ventricina, the typical cured meat of the Vasto and Chieti areas
  • Arrosticini (sheep skewers) grilled over charcoal
  • Local extra virgin olive oil and bread
  • Regional wines and draft beer

In recent editions, the festival has hosted the Accademia della Ventricina, featuring historical and cultural insights into the famous cured meat curated by Rado Donato, testifying to the deep bond between the event and the Abruzzo charcuterie tradition.

Music and conviviality

The gastronomic experience is always accompanied by live musical entertainment: over the years, the stage has hosted folk music groups, ballroom orchestras, and DJs who keep the evening lively until late. Free admission and the family-friendly atmosphere make the festival a celebration for all ages, highly popular among the residents of Mozzagrogna and the neighboring towns of the Sangro Valley.

A piece of Abruzzo tradition

The Prosciutto al Borgo Festival perfectly represents the spirit of Abruzzo village festivals: an event born to promote local products and the work of local producers, which over the years has become a summer landmark in the province of Chieti. Those who visit the event find not only good food but also the opportunity to discover an authentic village and the warm hospitality of the people of the Sangro.
